I would put one of his cards (3rd year fleer maybe) in your pocket along with a pen just in case you get the opportunity. If the opportunity does not come up no one has to know you have a card in your pocket.
ebay MJ's cards and pick out the one you think looks the coolest. so even though you don't collect...you have his auto on something you think has good eye appeal.
Keeping a ball in the car is a great idea and keeps things from coming across as staged of rude.
I'm always wearing a pair of vintage Jordan's whenever I'm not working so I would absolutely ask for him to sign one if I happen to meet him. Not sure what your age is or if Jordan's are your style though
I have read somewhere that due to his contract with Upper Deck he cannot sign 86 Fleer cards. Not sure if this holds for private family functions but I know this is the case at signing events.
If you aren't really a collector of basketball I would go with something that is more of a cool conversation piece. I think it's way cooler to say had a beer with Jordan than just simply getting a card signed that is a dime a dozen. Not saying Jordan signed cards are not collectible. They def are and usually command top dollar. However I don't really think they are that uncommon. I would go with a signed beer bottle or something like that. Something unique that is from the party would be the way I would go. God luck
Skip the autograph and just have a great time. No stress of looking for a signing opportunity or wondering if it's rude or inappropriate. And I'm sure MJ would appreciate NOT being asked for an auto at a family gathering.
I would not bring anything like a card or other memorabilia to have signed. It would feel inappropriate to me. Instead, I would enjoy the experience and if it comes up naturally (say he offers to sign something for you) then pick an item like a bar napkin, a $20 bill from your wallet, or something similar. It will end up having more meaning than a basketball card that you're not really into anyway.
also I bet if he did want to sign stuff. He will have stuff there that he gives away to friends and what not. So bring nothing but a knife or scissors .
I would be happy to just say I went to a party once were Michael Jordan was at. I would actually be surprised if you even got the chance to even talk to him. This guy is going to be heavily surrounded by real friends and family. He's not dumb, he knows his signature commands real money. Jordan may even turn you down and that might leave you with a negative impression of him. Theres a place for everything like even autographs and I dont think this is one of them. Picture and a handshake is probably more realistic. I dont think youll get to be in his "circle" for more than 1 minute.
it is not in poor taste if you were "told to bring something." if you think it will be awkward, don't do it. if you are not worried about it being awkward, i vote for the signed cast!
A very nice member here has offered to send me a selection of cards including his early examples so I am just going to stick with that. I will just put a few cards in my jacket. As I said I am not a basketball collector so either way it doesn't really matter. If I do go I will just be looking for a good time. I won't even think of pulling out the cards unless others do for whatever reason and there seems to be a signing moment. I think it will be easy to tell if the moment feels appropriate or not. From what I understand there will be less than 20 people there including me. If I go I will look forward to discussing baseball with him if it is an option. If there is a hoop there I think what I would like most is a photo of him and I shooting baskets. That would be the coolest thing of all. Again, I may end up not going and this is all for nothing.
Rob ... if you want to get the Sh!t knocked out of you, ask him to sign this! LOL

edit: easy to carry in your pocket as well.

if you can't obtain his autograph that way, perhaps he'd be interested in a little game of H-O-R-S-E.

I'm not one to compliment Lee very often, but no one knows poor taste better than him.
