Estate Sale return = Yep, Disappointment

It has been a while since I have went to a sale with any hopes of getting something decent. Found a sale that has my hopes up with what I can see in the boxes. The good stuff is a little oddball, so I'm hoping that it flies under the radar.

For you guys that attend these regularly, am I setting myself up for a huge waste of time?

It just depends on what you like. For instance, I enjoy all sports cards, gas station memorbilia, old bottles, music collectibles, and old movie pitures. The last sale I went to, there was none of this stuff available, at least up front. There was plenty of expensive art, an over priced pipe collection, and lots of old tins. I liked the tins and some of theolder 40's toys, but just not enough to start getting serious in them. If you have several interests, you might hit a jackpot. I passed on a bunch of old worthless railroad stock certificates that I wish I would of picked up and some WW II posters that I would of liked to have. But this stuff is not cheap anymore.Just go to have fun and maybe something will get your attention. I blew it awhile back, about 10 years ago when I ran into a very nice collection of those old glass bottles from the 40's, they were little candy jars with candy the size of BB's in them. This guy had planes, trucks, different autos, tractors, etc. He had at least 20 different jars, all with the correct caps on them. Real nice, would of loved to have picked those up. Just get there early and check it out. Have fun.

  • There are several boxes of cards from the early 70's with a $100 regional issue on top of one of them. Hope it sneaks through, but guess we'll see.

They do have some other interesting things that I have studied up on, so should be interesting. Just hope it's not a total wast eof time.

Is the sale run by a company or the family?

You'll likely see much better prices on things if it's run by the family

Good luck - hope you hit a goldmine

It is a crap shoot. i went to some sales and saw stuff from the late 80's and early 90's that they want 5X the going rate and yet I have been to some where I pickled up a binder of 1975 Topps in near mint to mint shape for $8.00 and at another one a box of 50's and 60's stars and commons for $4.00.

I could only be so lucky!!!! image

All the card related stuff is 71-73 from what I can see in the pics. There is never anything 70's or later near me, so I have no idea what to expect.

No 1987 Topps or 88 Donruss image

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. I never see older stuff at sales in my area. I just see overpriced junk wax era stuff usually.

good luck....estate auctions always seem to be hit or miss for me
  • Well, didn't have to stay long. Every good card had already been picked out. Nothing but commons left and the old men were tossing them around in disgust.

Good way for the auction complany to lose customers for sure.

I stopped going to these things and garage sales, when everyone was advertising, "classic / vintage" cards. Nothing but 1990's crappola. image
