To Stone's and Baley's perfectly succinct descriptions, let me add that the circ-cam is sometimes also commonly described as "two-tone". To me, the many variations of that darker tone in the recesses of the devices which contrasts with the lighter tone on the wear of the highpoints are the epitome of the collectible circulated coin.
