Since the 84s were distributed in one card packs and the 85s in 3 card packs, I assume they were also distributed in packs. But I do not have one either. I do have the set and the fairly scarce Promotional Sample card for that set.

    Al-

Was the Murray the only example with the Promo back?

Interestingly -- the Schmidt 1986 is the only Super I've been able to find in top grade [e.g. PSA 10]. Given their size, all of them are really hard to find in nice grade.

It's been very easy to find boxes of the 1984 and 1985 around. Surprised to have never seen any 1986s. I think Kruk Cards used to have a horde of these cards-

Marc---as far as I know the Murray was the only sample card

The '86 Supers were also issued in vending boxes. I have a couple of them.
The collation was terrible though, just like the regular sized card Topps vending boxes.

There was a promo card also issued for Carlton Fisk. I recieved it directly from Topps in 1986, when you could order cases of product direct from Topps. I held on to this card until about 15 years ago and sold it on e-Bay. Didn't go for much, card wasn't in good shape, as it arrived from Topps in a flimsy manilla envelope with no protection and a order form for 1986 Topps Supers..

Time-4--that is great info. SCD lists the Murray but not the Fisk. I have never seen a Fisk. You don't happen have a scan of it do you ?

Was the back like the Murray above ?

  • I do not have a scan of the Fisk, and I am pretty certain the back was similar to the Murray. I didn't think much about the card at the time, as I thought all Topps direct dealers received a promo in the mail. It was the first promo card I ever received, which at the time I thought was a neat idea. I didn't get much for the card, I believe it went to a Fisk collector.
Totally slipped my mind until I saw this thread. Supers were not in high demand, and minimum case requirements kept me from ordering. I have the 84-86 complete sets, with the 86 being the toughest for me to get.

Just wanted to update this topic based on the other forum inquiries. I have been looking over some old Sports Collectors Digests I have from 1986, and have seen ads in these issues for 1986 Topps Supers.
I don't remember what I was able to order when I received my order form and promo in 1986, as that was over 27 years ago. Looking through the ads, dealers were selling complete sets, singles, and vending boxes of 500. There was also a big dealer from that time selling blank back singles from cases too. Nobody was selling wax boxes. So I don't believe based on this information wax boxes were produced for this set. Because the average SCD was over 300 pages, it would be a shock that anybody selling wouldn't offer wax boxes if they were available. The 1986 Topps Minis were really advertised, every ad seemed to be selling them. But only a few dealers were selling Supers, and in the manners mentioned above.
I do believe that these were available in cut card cases too. I think I saw these advertised recently in the past 8 years (as I have been buying cases from the 80's over this time) but can't recall if it was on e-Bay, Kruk, or Dave and Adams (from the Myland buyout). As such, until I can find some ads selling them this way, assume my memory is bad image
I have tons more issues to go through, 1984-89, so I will update as I find more out.
If anyone has specific questions about the ads, please pm me or respond here.

as far as I know there were no unopened boxes/packs. It was all distribution of vending cases that were suppose to make sets.

I've been looking for a set of these. I've never seen them offered in vending lots. I'll keep an eye out for those as well.

    Thanks,

I might have an extra set. I'll check either tomorrow or the day after for you.

I have four total sets that I have never even looked at because they are inside shrink wrap and I just never thought to check them out.

They look to be in NM-MT from the two outside cards.

If anybody wants one just shoot me a fair offer.

I'll probably keep one for myself.

  • I cracked a vending case of these around 4-5 years ago. Got it for a hundred bucks so I figured how could I go wrong. Well, it didn't exactly line my pockets. I pulled less than five 10's. I think it was the Schmidt, a Murray, Strawberry and can't remember but I think Reggie Jackson but that was it. I think there was 6 vending boxes within the case. They came in plain brown thicker cardboard boxes.

Funny -- as I must have purchased my Schmidt 10 from you, then. Didn't think I'd *ever* see a 10 from the 1986 Supers for Schmidt, and was happy to add that one to my collection-

To date, there's only eight PSA 10's from the entire set, and Nolan Ryan has nothing higher than PSA 8
