Is the Epson Perfection V300 Photo Color Scanner still the scanner of choice for sports cards?

Is there a better scanner or is the V300 still the best scanner value for sports cards?

I am not sure if there is a better one or not, but I really like the one I have.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

The V30 is the exact same one but doesn't scan slides...so if you don't need that it's even less. The scan quality is pretty amazing.

Be forewarned that the V30 (and probably the V300) does not scan all the way to the edge of the glass. You'll either have to be really good at laying things straight on the glass, use software to straighten your scans, come up with a frame or something to put cards against, or live with scans being cropped.

Also no good for shiny chrome type cards.

Awesome for slabbed non-shiny cards though
  • A week ago I bought a V300 on recommendation from here. I've haven't used it much but so far it has performed great. I should take time to read just what is the best way to use it.

I'm a huge fan of the CanoScan 4400f. Simple, cheap and does a more than adequate job.

Rob ... you should be able to pick it up for about $75.00 delivered. Bought mine 2.5+ years ago and I really like the way it works. As has been said already, if you are going to be scanning a lot of refractors and shiny stuff, maybe not the scanner for you. OTHERWISE, it's EXCELLENT!

The V30 and V300 are excellent for all slabs. They scan at depth as well as the surface, allowing ungraded cards and BGS slabs to scan clearly. As has been noted, they create a rainbow with refractors and occasional glare on Chrome cards. Also, you'll get the "stars" on your slabs as a result of the LED light source. All-in-all, a small sacrifice for great quality scans at a very affordable price. I've had mine for awhile and it still works like a charm. One day, I'll actually read the instruction manual and find out how to really make it sing!

echo the thoughts of others, V300 has made a big difference.

what i particularly like about it is being able to scan a raw card and view a customized larger image to identify those teeny-tiny flaws which seem to always find the eye of a PSA grader.

    I like it!
  • Both Canon and Epson are excellent choices. Go with the Epson IMO.
