Name some tough cards.

Thought it would be fun to make up a list of tough cards, dont have to necessary be expensive cards, but obviously tough= $$ could be tough based on population, centering, ink spots, etc.. lets try to stick to PSA 7's and 8's , 1975 and earlier. Any takers??

Heres a couple from 1970 that I have found to be tough to find in 8's

1970 #458 Rose All Star
1970 #464 Bench All Star
1970 #455 B. Robinson All Star

    1976 Topps George Brett

Edited: I just saw the PSA 8 parameter. This card is tough in PSA 9, but achievable in 8.

You think those are hard to find in Topps, try finding them in PSA 8 for O-Pee-Chee

  • Probably worth their weight in gold.

    1969 Brock in a 8
  • Hi Paul, Im going to guess centering is the problem.

Hey Ed, that card looks tough in any mid grade
  • Whats the issue with the Brett ? Ink or centering? all the 8's I see seem to well centered.

Actually, the upper left corner of that '76 Brett seems to have a touch of wear.

71 Munson is a tough card to find in high grade. I mean 8's go for over a grand.

Tied for Rarest Card in the World ......1909 Cabanas Pete Hill
only 2 different cards were ever made (known) of this Hall of Famer, and only a single example is know of his Cabanas rookie

there are thousands of cards from sets in the ACC that are known with surviving numbers of under 5... ie every single T204 square, T208, T209 BW, T211, T213-1, T214, T215 Pirate, T216-3, T217, T222, etc. and there are many other E, W, M, N, T, FC, V, H, etc sets just as rare

Of those mentioned, I can attest to the 71 Munson, 76 Brett in 8.5 or 9, and 86 Young.

The PSA 9 Brett on ebay now is, to me, a very weak 9. I would be all over the bidding of a solid 9. I'm not even in on this one. It has tilt, a corner is touched, and it has a print issue with blotching of blue in the bottom left area where his name is. If I can see all this with the naked eye, it's a pass for me for that money, even if it does fit within the textbook definition of a 9.

A big issue with that card is usually black ink bleed around the top border.

either i have double vision or that '76 Brett looks like George might have looked to himself the morning after.

'56 Topps Dale Mitchell. sick money gets you an 8.

This is my vote...with all the unopened of this stuff out there that has been ripped over the last 15 years, and still hasn't been a new 10 in 10 years! I had one and sold it back in 2002...very well could have been the last time it hit ebay.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.

I second that...1972 topps Hank Aaron in action......centering is the issue on that one!
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
I assume for the most part we're talking stars... Try finding 1975 Topps Mini HOFers without tilt. Almost every 9 Ryan is a dog. Ditto for 660 Aaron. Epically tilted and OC cards.

There's a whole slew of '72 In Action cards that are never well-centered. In fact the entire run of them leading up to the Aaron are particularly tough, including McCrae and Dietz. Vida Blue, Paul Schaal and Bob Barton IA also spring to mind.

  • MattyC you are correct, yesterday my PSA 9 Fisk went for 180 pretty good premium.
  • 1985 Topps Walter Payton. Really tough to get above an 8
  • 1973 Topps Yaz #245. Of the almost 500 that have been graded...only 19 PSA 9's exist...and no 10's.

The toughest card that I have ever looked for is 1968 Mira Arnold Palmer. The Mira cards are not really that rare. They are on eBay pretty often but in the past 7 years I have never seen one for sale. One person contacted me from the boards who had one but his asking price was over 10 grand.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here
  • anybody found me those 88 Swell footballs yet?
