Bubba Smith and Topps

image
As a kid I had my star cards sorted by player if I didn't have complete sets.
With Bubba I noticed the same photo used and coloring the jersey to match, was very interesting.
I realize they colored and reused photos quite a bit, but I think they could have taken a few more photos of Bubba.

...and the other three

Wow, that may be the record on two fronts...

    1) Most times reusing a photo

    2) Longest period between photo uses

I'd love to know if anyone has either beat.

interesting to note that as a member of the '75 Raiders, they presumably wanted him to portray more of a grandfatherly image, but as a member of the '76 Oilers he was using Just For Men.

    This is fantastic.

I love the '72 Colts => '75 Raiders => '76 Oilers and how his jersey magically changes color
  • I really like the signed one. I have the 1971 signed.

  • We share the same Alma Mater, so I've always collected his cards. I finally picked up the 70 Topps and 70 Kelloggs about 5 years ago at a show and I remember when I first grabbed them to buy them I had to do a double take because I was sure I already owned them, even though they were on my wish list.

It's in a tie with the 1966 and 1969 Topps Willie Mays cards (shared photo) and the 1965 and 1968 Topps Willie Mays cards (different shared photo). Topps used a totally different photos of Willie in 1967.

Not sure if it's a tie. Bubba was 6 years between and Willie was only 3....

Looks like the '72 and '73 were taken on the same day.

We have a new leader in the clubhouse. Joe Kapp, 1960 and 1969.

They could have at least painted Kapp's jersey purple. image

Nope, the record has to be 13 years. Curt Flood had his picture taken for his 1958 rookie card. The photo shows up again in 1971, on the back of his card.

Looks like the record is 19 years. You guys forgot about this classic 1989 Topps Bubba Smith card...

If you're like some others at that time, I am assuming you have at least 100 of them.

That's GREAT! Rumor has it that during the prior summer Mr. Smith went to the beach with a shirt and gloves on. Thus the reason his neck area and hands never tanned!
    STAY HEALTHY!

A good caption to go along with ths hilarious photo would be the 'Hey Norton ! I know that you know, that I know that you know, that you wanna....' from the Eddie Murphy live movie from the 80's. You know the one ? that can't be completed here ?

interesting. that is extremely lazy by Topps. I bet there's a story behind that...someone there didn't like him. interesting that the 72 & 73 cards are from the same photo shoot.
    Enjoy your collection!

Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001
  • Maybe Bubba just didn't like having his picture taken.

At 6' 7" 265Lbs Im not going to tell him to say "Cheese" if he don't want to.

Al bundy had one heck of a time trying to get his Football back from Bubba. LOL

For the Hockey Fans, I noticed the 71-72 Topps card of Phil Esposito (both stat and LL) was recycled several times, including as late as 74-75 Stat cards.

Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.
