Update on Stolen Herd of Buffalos

In July I sent six Buffalos to CAC by express mail fully insured. They were removed from the inner package, resealed and sent on their way. Nine days later they arrived in Memphis Tenn. and it was noticed by a USPS employee that the package had been tampered with. The employee put it in another package and forwarded it to Far Hills N.J. where the Post Master and a CAC representative opened the package. I filed a claim with the Postal Service and it was denied. They sent a check for $15 which is their standard procedure. I then filed an appeal with the claims appeal in St Louis MO. This appeal included the return of their $15 check and every piece of documentation you can imagine. This appeal was also denied. They returned the check. I then filed my last appeal with Vice President & Consumer Advocate, US Postal Service, Domestic Claims Appeals Washington DC.
Yesterday I received a letter from John Sigmon, Washington DC stating.
I have reviewed the claim file and your letter. In view of the circumstances surrounding your case I will authorize an additional payment in the amount of xxxx.xx for your lost items. The St. Louis Accounting Services will certify payment and issue you a check at the above address. Check number xxxxxxxx for $15 dated 9/10/12 is being returned in this correspondence. This added to the $xxxx.xx equals $xxxx.xx for items insured. I appologize for the inconvenience and frustration this matter has caused. This office is the final level of postal authority concerning claim appeals.

I would like to thank all of the board members who referred me to postal publications and what was needed in these appeals.

    Way to go!

I know that you'd rather have the coins, but congratulations on your dogged persistence anyway.

Still sad the coins are not with you where they belong, but I am glad that the right thing was eventually done and that you stuck to your guns.
Hopefully, the extra hoops that you jumped through will tick off someone at a high enough level that they do a little more investigating and weed out anyone that may have tampered with the package or, at the least, work on tighter control measures to prevent this in the future.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I'm glad that you didn't give up and you got some sort of restitution.

Can you provide a list of the lost coins for us to see what got lost?

Good news, glad you got the check.

It's a shame that they made it so difficult. I'm sure a lot of people give up and never get their claim paid.

I'm glad it worked out! As I heard one time: "Don't let the bastiges win!" Well, maybe not that exact word since the real one won't be published.
