Justice will be served on this former Postal employee.

Some of you may remember that I had reported early last year about having been a victim of this S.O.B. Looks like he'll have 10 years to think about whether or not the money he made from selling the stolen goods, (none of which were ever recovered) was worth the time. Dale Richmond has pleaded guilty in Federal Court in Rochester, N.Y. on Monday to multiple charges, and will face sentencing of up to 10 years in prison. Wall Street Journal article

I'm still looking for the items that were stolen while enroute to me. Two unique 19th century U.S. Mint medals, which will always be stolen property until recovered. Fellow dealers Ron & Melody Winter were victimized for tens of thousands worth of coins during the period in or around November 2010 - January 2011.

Link? If this is the guy in Rochester, great news. I'm pretty sure he got me also.

An insured package I sent to this area went missing. The USPS paid the claim, I am guessing it was this guy.

I agree with Coindeuce, I hope he has a long time in the slammer to think.

That is why I hate it when a postal label prints the postage paid on it. A high value means a lot of insurance. I have looked for ways to not have this printed out but so far have not found it.

what's crazy to me is there's not mention of any recovery of any of the stolen items. it seems that a rare mickey mantle card could be recovered somehow.

is it justice when the stolen goods remain at large?

the system taxes us for putting this guy through the "justice system" and instead of him continuing to get paid by the federal government for doing actual work as a mail employee, he gets free shelter and food for doing nothing but rotting in a cell for 10 years....and what do those who've lost get in return? where is their justice? the items are presumably gone...who benefited? the holders of the stolen goods, and the system in this case. the rest of us pay for it.

PayPal shipping allows you to hide the postage cost. It seems the USPS website doesn't, though.

Even with ebay/paypal labels a crooked postal employee can see as it is marked insured and or signature confirmation. Also when it is scanned in the clerk can see everything that isn't on the label..cost,amount of insurance, etc.

This guy had made a list of area dealers in coins and collectibles, and he specifically targeted packages with those names on the mail. Any other packages that he rifled were at random. The genius was actually leaving the opened packages inside the sort facility, which is part of what initiated the Postal Inspectors surveillance of him while on the jobs.

  • Having been the victim of postal crooks a few times, I have no sympathy for this guy. Have a nice time in prison.
  • I hope he serves 10 years but more likely he'll be out in 18-24 months and will have learned nothing except that it was worth it.

    Ding!

Correct answer. He'll likely be given an opportunity at restitution to the USPS for the amount of insurance they paid out in exchange for a very light sentence.

As far as any cooperation in anyone getting their items back...image BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

coindeuce, were your stolen items sent registered mail?

Note that the thief was not a mail carrier, but an electronics tech who had access to the mail. Registered mail should not have been accessible to just any employee working in the facility.

Both items sent to me were mailed insured for under $200 each.
The defendant was totally uncooperative with Postal Inspectors. Not much chance he will be able to afford the level of restitution required to offset insurance payments either. I expect he will serve at least 5 years. Understand, the OIG would not have pursued a criminal prosecution at this level for someone stealing chump change.

Mail fraud is just plain wrong, but by an insider is particularly sobering. I trust the punishment will fit the crime.

Please keep us updated as to his final sentence.

If he had told authorities where the stolen coins went to that at least some of them might be retrieved I would be a little more lenient. Make my day, tell me he got the full 10 years. I mean c'mon he was stealing not just from customers but from the US Mail.

Too bad he will only see a year or so locked up. If he is a first time offender I could even see no jail time. The crooks that robbed us for $100K were looking at 30+ years but when it came down to it they let one guy go outright because he squealed on the others when he got caught, one other guy got put on the ankle bracelet for a month at his home but only ended up doing it for a few days, the one guy that already had two convictions for burglary the same year got two years...... Then we get a letter saying he will be released in less than a year for good behavior. image

About a year ago I was contacted by a federal agency on a case. The perpetrators were looking at 30 years. He (the federal agent) gave me the case number, which my nephew looked up and read, but it made me so uncomfortable knowing these men beat an old woman for her stuff that when I was done with the appraisal and assessment, I tried to block it out. I believe in justice and truth.

I didn't read the link but your thread reminded me of an experience that seemed like yesterday.
