Opinions on the uni-safe albums for canadian coins

I bought a collection recently that included a pair of the brown UNI-SAFE albums with large and small cents. They look like a well made item to me and I was thinking about getting another one to put my nickel dollars in.

I mentioned it to a dealer friend of mine and he suggested that this type of album might be dangerous to put copper or nickel coins in because they can trap moisture in the little pockets with the coin.

I was impressed with the album design itself I had thought to continue adding to it but I don't want to use an album that might ruin my coins.

Is my dealer friend right about these trapping moisture? He isn't trying to sell me anything so there is no profit to him in getting me to ditch them.

I would appreciate anything positive or negative anyone has to offer . I live in New England so its not exactly an arid climate here

If these are the albums with slideout pockets for the coins, be careful. Some of them use PVC for the pockets. Don't know about UNI-SAFE and I don't want to badmouth them if they don't deserve it, but it wouldn't hurt to check to be sure.

Yes there is a horizontal piece that slides out with pockets for each coin in it. I like the design its easy to get coin in and out of it but I don't want to kill my copperimage

I have seen some like that that were PVC and some that weren't. If the slideouts are soft and flexible, I'd be suspicious.

I would be leary of long term storage in these albums. I think the pages have PVC in them but the slides don't. Still the slides are not sealed against the PVC penetrating them.

I found that the large cent album was very difficult to work with because the pockets and coins are the exact same size. I had high grade coins. Worn coins VF or lower went in tight.

The pieces that slide in don't feel like PVC to me, they are very stiff , the pages themselves feel softer though . I don't have any PVC flips around to compare to the page.

I see on the link the following quote

"The material used in the manufacturing of this product has had softening agent removed to protect coins and has been successfully market tested for over thirty years."

That could mean they used to be PVC but its a bit weaselly . Maybe the slides are ok but the pages aren't image

Maybe my dealer buddy had some of these that were made with PVC and he is just misremembering PVC damage as moisture damage. image

I use these albulms and the old Coin Master Albulms. Had coins in them for 25 yrs+ that look just like they did the day I put them in them.

However,,,,,, I use KoinTain capasules and each coin is in it's own capasule sealed from the actual albulm and slides.

I just like the way the coins look in this type albulm.
