from an e-bay seller, do you ask for the seller to pay your return shipping charges along with the standard refund of the sale price and original shipping?

A good seller would offer when approached about a trimmed card. But yes, I would agree it's appropriate to ask for it.

If you file a claim and go through ebay, it's all paid for on their end
