WTB: 1795 $5 S/D in XF-AU

I'm having a hard time tracking one of these down and figured it couldn't hurt to ask here. Please let me know if you have one for sale or know of anyone willing to part with theirs!

    What does S/D mean?
    When in doubt, don't.

It's an over"letter" (not unlike an overdate) caused by a mint engraver not paying attention and misspelling STATES as STATED

1795 was a very bad year for the mint, as they also mis-spelled STATES as STETES on the 50c and had a plethora of additional overdates across other denominations.

I have the 50c example of the same mistake (also happened in 1795) but the $5 has eluded me so far.

  • Probably having a hard time as PCGS has graded only 6 pieces in that range, and I would guess NGC has graded less than that.

The pop reports aren't accurate for this (those are the ones that have specific variety attributions on the slab). It's a rare coin, but it's "only" an R5, with an estimated 40-80 existing.

  • Keep in mind those numbers are estimations and the survival estimate should be around half that or less in all likelihood.
