eBay Sellers or Otherwise: What Precautions are You Taking Mailing Coins to Storm Ravaged Areas?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,693 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had a few items end on eBay over the last few days and most of the buyers I see are from areas heavily affected by mega-storm Sally. What extra precautions are sellers here (website or auction houses) taking in sending out your coins?
I've decided to use USPS boxed Priority as the sturdy boxes the USPS provide allow for an extra layer of protection (in not getting so easily lost or misplaced), along with delivery or signature confirmation- over and above the insurance.

Any other suggestions or recommendations?

None of mine this week ended up going to that area so normal packing for me.
Problem is I won two items on Sunday from back there. One got out it looks like the other nothing showing since their email on Monday saying they were hit hard.
Edit to add looks like from their web site Central Jersey Rare coin is still closed by the storm.

I would be sending my normal way, signature required. I also tape of the address to make sure if wet the address is is tact.

Maybe ask if they wouldn't mind waiting a few days until a lot of the more serious issues are cleared up and if they still have a deliverable to address. I'd think it is in the best interest of BOTH parties to not have any issues that could complicate delivery.

    .
now that you mention it i'll google map any deliveries to areas reporting problems and then contact the buyers to alert of possible delayed shipping

It all depends on where you are sending the coins. I am in NJ close to the coast, but was lucky that we were just North of the eye and hardly received any rain. We did receive lots of wind damage, but no major home losses. Our USPS is up and running. The coast on the other hand is a problem and I would think that it would be the case for every State that was effected by the storm. In any case, I would send an email to all of your buyers and ask them how they faired and ask them if it is okay to send the package. If you do not hear from them then wait until you do. I would definitely only send the packages with delivery confirmation or signature confirmation, and insure the packages as long as it makes sense.

I have contacted all of my East Coast buyers to make sure they are there to receive the items. Thank goodness all seem to be OK.
