PCGS Price Guide question

OK... I've been searching ebay for some coins to add to my Morgan PCGS collection, preferably MS-63 to MS-64.

How accurate is the PCGS Price Guide? For example I'm looking at an 1881 MS-64 Philly Morgan (Price Guide = $104), ebay BIN = $170! WTF!

Similar results for several other common Morgans in MS63-MS64. Significant priceflation over PCGS guide.

What's up with that? Or Should I stop shopping on eBay? image

Thanks for Posting

Cheers!

P.S. I'm interested in serious responses. I don't want to hear any of this crap that the "market" is what the Buyer is willing to pay and what the Seller is willing to accept. I get that. What I don't get is how off can PCGS Price Guide be vis-a-vis eBay Seller prices, and or Vice versa!

People can ask for anything, what they get might be another! Check Heritage and Teletrade auction results!

IMO it is unrealistic to expect a high degree of uniformity in prices for like coins. Every seller is different and every coin is different. Some premiums are justified and some aren't. There are times when I wish I could get price guide values for my coins. For what you are buying I'd suggest buying in person so you can see exactly what you are getting.

That is why they call it a "guide"

Common Morgans all took a decline on the price guide recently. Many sellers on eBay might still be using old prices and then adding profit and eBay fees on top of the old price.

  • After you do an Ebay search for the coin you want, check the boxfor compleated auctions. The ones that sold will be in green. This will give you a good idea were price is. I would then takr Bajjerfan's advice and go to a show and buy.
  • I have purchased hundreds of Coins off ebay. Most of the time the BIN is the dealers price paid plus fees and profit.

You will probably have better luck doing the Auction instead of the BIN.

Helpful Hints, get auctions that end on Friday Nights. Not as much bidding. Also auctions that end after 10 PM eastern time dont has as much bidders.

Next on the common Date Morgans, look at Teletrade on Holidays. You can make a killing on those days.

I purchased my 1901-P AU58 CAC Morgan on July 4 and paid 850 with fees and everything. The Coins similar to it are going for double that.

My advice is be patient and the common date Coins will come to you at a price you want to pay. If you want it now, you will pay more now. Patience is the key.

If green listing included a "best offer" option, you will need to click on the listing to see the actual price paid.

A quick check with CoinFacts shows 5 recent (sept) HA and ebay auctions with prices realized of 90-117-129-142-173 for your MS64 PCGS '81 philly mint DieClash.

Hope it's o.k with our hosts to post that info.

    Thanks for that derryb!

My eBay moniker is Koinnoisseur and I'm an experienced eBayer. I've noticed that the trend on eBay coins is BIN, BIN or MO, and lastly true Auction. I really appreciate your responses. I have purchased one coin on HA although I've bid on dozens. And I am very patient.

Just trying to perceive why the PCGS price guide values seem to be way lower than the going prices on the bay.

BTW I've purchased several coins from Bonanza Coins (Julian) at a premium. The guy has a good eye. So I'm not obsessed with a acquiring all of my coins at PCGS price guide. But when I take a look at the offering on eBay Top Sellers/screwers (as Russ would attest) I am amazed at the low quality dregs (as Laura would attest) being offered at such high premiums over PCGS guide values

    Cheers!
