1970 Topps Set - Heritage Auction

gemintgemint Posts: 6,100 ✭✭✭✭✭
Did anyone see that a high grade 1970 Topps baseball set sold for a cummulative $112k in Heritage's recent auction? That's an incredible price. I know there were lots of 10s but even with that, I didn't think this particular set would pull in that kind of coin since it isn't that popular. Is that a record for 70s sets? The only one I think that could top that is maybe Oleander's 1971 set if he ever sold it.

  • WOW ... Did not realize the final realized price. I placed a few bids, won zero, the bidding seemed out of control. I would guess, that it was easily a record price for a 70's set.

Frank Bakka sold his 1972 Topps set about 5 years ago on ebay.........many of his PSA 10s were then 1 of 1s........He broke it up and sold it over a period of 2-3 months. I added up the totals and it amounted to over $110,000+

I wondered about that. I've dealt with Frank in past, great guy.

Does anyone know if Frank is doing ok? Last time I had contact was about a few years ago & he was dealing with some major health problems.

I haven't spoken to Frank in a few years either, but his 72 OPC set was last updated on 10/17/2012. So he's still plugging away on it.

  • Speaking as someone who just had to pay 130 bones for a Tony Oliva PSA 8 that is not perfectly centered, I disagree with the statement that '70 Topps is not a popular set.

I too would argue that the 1970 set is far from unpopular based on some of the low pop prices I've had to pay over the past year on my quest to the PSA 9 or better complete set!
