I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

Looks to be quite worn, I'd say VG. Fine is a bit of a stretch fo me. As far as value goes, Krause says $350 but doesn't specify a grade in my copy, maybe they have changed it recently. A proof brought $1500 in 2008. Check for prices realized anywhere you can find them. The coin, if really rare, would do much better in a slab.

Unfortunately the Greek market is really depressed right now. Some coins are 50% off their high value just a few years ago. Hopefully Dimitri will see this thread.

My first thought was fFne. Then again, that is my default for any fairly worn coin that I have no idea what it looks like in AU+ image

  • I think it is Fine
  • I am not an expert at Greece grading but---I have cataloged in 2 x 2 holders well over 10,000 coins from over 300 countries in the last seven years.l In order to be in fine condition any coin that has an eagle with feathers or a crown must have at least half of the lines on them to be considered in fine condition. The crown on this piece has no lines showing. I have one just like this. You can see the lines at the bottom of the crown and the three diamonds. Also have the 1894a 20 lepta that is in the same condition as yours and I graded it vg(IMHO). By the way the 2004 Krause has the 10 lepta in fine at $2 and the 20 lepta in fine at $1.50. My 2011 Krause has the same figures. Where did the $350 figure come from? Are we talking about the same coin or have I just missed something?

My online 6th edition shows $350, shown to probably be a typo by olmanjon. My paper 4th shows it at $2. Per this new info, I wouldn't get it slabbed until positive. I'll check to see if I have one. Others? A $2 coin should be many places and in many collections.

Not my series but also the coin features such attributes as rim hit, etc.

In this condition it is very common and very cheap (F-VF @ $5-$20). Its value rises above $300-$350 in MS63-64 and skyrockets ($2000+) in the very few gems and 66s that are out there. This was a period that the Greek state had declared bankruptcy, and (as a Latin Union member) was not allowed to mint coins in silver and gold. When the drachma restored its parity with the French franc in 1909, silver dracmas and 2 drtachmai were minted again, after 27 years.

There is also a key date in this series, the 1893 20L which is scarce (and pricier than its peers of 1894 and 1895) in lower conditions and quite rare and expensive in unc. The same design , in the same values (5,10 and 20L) and the same alloy (cu-ni) appeared in 1901, in the coinage of the temporarily autonomous island of Crete. None of the three is rare, even in unc, but there is an extremely rare and expensive variety of the (Cretan) 10L in medal strike.
