In many articles I see references to the "crime of 1873" . I don't understand what exactly people were upset about. They say that silver was demonetized in 1873 but what does that mean exactly?
Coins made of silver were still being made and used after 1873 . In what way was silver demonetized if in fact it was still being used as money?
