Wondering about darkside Themes...Ideas Welcome!

Exactly what the title says - seems there is an endless amount of areas and avenues to choose from - to a point many probably even get overwhelmed so I was wondering what suggestions others have to suggest.

  • I thought of collecting coins and medals created by Oscar Roty.
  • I had a really cool customer this weekend who was putting together his clam bake set. He had 10 coins he was looking for. Like a 1970 Bermuda Dollar with a Wahoo on it. He was also collecting any kind of wind powered boat on a coin he could find. Collect what you like.
How about a set of foreign coins that were made in the USA.

What's your pedigree? I'm German so I went in that direction and the ensuing research helped me obtain a far better understanding where and what my ancestors went through over the ages.

Lions and cars do nothing for me, but BBL do:

I thought of ships and city views many times as viable options.

A gold coin or a crown from each country (or State but can get endless if you add German States, and so forth) came up as a great idea actually.

    cache..Poland and Israeli..

Some good ideas already and here's a few I've thought about.

Your birth year coins. I'm actually doing this and its a real departure from my tendancy to be a specialist. I'm old enough that there were relatively few NCLT or collector oriented coins so I'm mostly getting circulation issues. You can limit yourself to just one from each country or all circulating coins at the time or all coins - circulating or otherwise (e.g., pieforts, essais, proofs, etc). This really expands your knowledge (at least it did mine) and you can easily control your collecting scope and budget. You can make it even more interesting by limiting your purchases to bargain bins/junk boxes altho that's a little too hard core to me.

Coins and medals of Albrecht Durer. Interesting series and I even found a specialist catalogue when I was thinking about this. Some amazing issues and a great deal of material seems to be out there. Maybe some day but at the moment it is too big of a diversion of resources and attention from my primary interests.

Christmas (or your other favorite holiday) related issues. I discovered that some German cities issue (or at least issued) interesting medals in conjunction with their Christmas markets when we visited Munich a few years ago. A little less affordable now given the price of silver, but there's a lot of material out there ranging from Franklin Mint medals and ingots to actual coins with Christmas themes.

I have a friend who collects airplanes as a topic, primarily on currency but I think there are a few coins as well.

  • Collect everything coin or medal related. Over time you will find yourself gravitating toward certain countries or thymes and you will find out what you really enjoy. Happy hunting.

that's a really valid point actually.

    Marc,

I collect whatever catches my eye and fits my budget, but I'm partial to ships and animals. Ships can be graceful, and there are coins depicting a large variety of animals, but I would avoid NCLT, and probably anything beyond a certain date, such as 1970. You could further narrow the field by metal or having q minimum size.

I have always thought that siege issue or revolutionary coinage would be interesting. There are many examples across continents and centuries.

I also thought that a german state themed 'wildman' set of coinage would be interesting. The wildman has been featured on coins minted by several german states over a 200+ year period.

If modern issues are more your style, the Russian mint has minted a huge number of commems over the last couple of decades that would be interesting to pursue.

I was born in 1988 which was right around the time various countries started selling bullion coins... which has resulted in a plethora of 5 and 12 ounce gold coins as well as many very expensive NCLT coins.

This is an ancillary interest and certainly wouldn't be "enough" by itself for me. Maybe its because my "serious" interests are in arcane areas such as baroque papal, Roman folles, Parthia and the Greek east, etc that the aluminum and other base metal coins of the 50s and 60s are such a fun palate cleanser. I find it almost as much fun to learn about the history and designs used a half century ago as those used 3 or 20 centuries ago. And some of these circulating issues can be a real challenge to find in nice condition.

edited to add: I also hope that Zohar and our other east coast friends are all safe and on high ground. We get tornados and floods out here with some degree of regularity so I really feel for you guys...

3:30AM Monday wife wakes me up and says baby wants to come out (pre due date, Tuesday). We rush to hospital (where I am now) get baby girl delivered and then storm kicks in. This place is built like a fort yet you really felt the wind and rain come down. This place is packed with patients from other hospitals that were evacuated - never seen so many babies in the nursery (we had our first born here as well). The staff here worked multiple shifts as reinforcement could not come in and people couldnt leave - not a single complaint. God bless them.
  • Figure out what themes interest you and collect from there. If you're into ancient history, try collecting coins of ancient Greek city-states. If European travel interests you, medieval coins which depict towns may tickle your fancy. If you like particular sorts of art and are into moderns, there many coins to fit your theme, like the "Painters of the World" series made by the Mint of Poland.

  • I wanted something fairly inexpensive with a rather long mintage history so I chose to put together a set of English copper/bronze milled farthings. With a few short breaks, they were minted from 1672 to 1956. There are only a few (5 or 6?) dates that are cost prohibitive for me, but others here should have no problems getting a pretty complete date set of coppers. Tin farthings are a bit tougher.

I'm only missing 11 dates to complete the set, including all keys, so I'm thinking about what's next. Halfpennies maybe? German states schillings?

    So many choices.

So far, it's been a fun and very educational experience!

Good luck with whatever you choose!

cool ideas - no end to possiblities - and no matter how many years one has collected..there is no end to the options.

I like the one crown (or taler image) or "certain" dates from each country/state..that talks to me.

Hopefully this thread will have helped others looking for ideas too

I wasn't thrilled for what was available for my year so I went -100. Anything cool from 1888?
  • Canadian large cent from 1888 has many die varieties and are easy to obtain in very nice conditions.
