1884-s S$ pcgs AU 55

Nice surfaces, with a hint of russet toning. Good buy at $600.
Why such the big jump at MS?

I disagree that $600 for an AU55 is a good buy. In fact, except in exceptional cases I think that is too high. Take a look at the Heritage Auction archives. PCGS AU55s usually sell for less than $500 (including buyer's fee) and some for less than $400.
If you are trying to talk yourself into spending $600 for an AU55 because MS prices are so crazy, I strongly urge you to look at many, many examples first, to get a good idea of what the difference is between OK, better and exceptional for the grade. Don't be in any rush whatsoever; there are plenty of them out there.
(edited to correct spelling typo, darn it)
From what I've read, not many surfaced during the Treasury release of 1962.
The same goes for the 83S to a lesser degree.
