CBH Variety help

I have been playing with my new toy and have been photograhing my coins for various reasons. While doing the 1812 half, I noticed a ghost of a 1 behind the 2 and got overly excited. I have an Overton 4th edition and noticed that none of the overdates listed match the elongated 1-7 stars on the obverse.....Was wondering what you all thought...

Yup. O.108. Reverse die cracks are giveaways.

    108. Hard to tell if it's a 108a from these photos. Seems to have had an old cleaning and it's been retoning for a while.

The elongated, or drawn, stars are common on many, many Overton varieties. They are the result of die erosion and indicate a later die state. If such a characteristic is not mentioned in Overton, it generally just means it is either not "diagnostic" for the die marriage (some DM are almost always found with drawn stars) or it is just not really that important for the die marriage or die state.

Be careful when using Overton as it is quite easy for "newbies" to get excited and believe they have a rare die variety. Be sure to check the coin against similar appearing die marriages so they can be excluded. R5 and above coins are rare for a reason ...
