Athletes you may not have heard of - but now you have

Thought it'd be cool to have a thread dedicated to athletes who did something truly amazing. With all the greed that surrounds sports today - I want a central spot I can go to give my children a list of real athletes he can look up to.

First off I nominate Joe Delaney as the man I hope my kid will turn out to be like one day. For those who don't know - Mr. Delaney was one of the brightest running backs in the NFL. He earned his paycheck, came home and flopped it on the TV for his wife/kids. After his second season, he died trying to save 3 children (successfully saving one of them) from a construction site sink hole filled with water - even though he knew he couldn't swim.

God Bless Mr Delaney

Would love to hear more stories of similar situations maybe the ordinary fan doesn't know about.

That's a great story and you're right, I'd never heard of him. I'll now try to never forget him

Wow, that is both heart-warming and absolutely heart breaking. What a tragedy. Thanks for posting this, I had never heard it before. I'll try and contribute someone's story, but don't have one at the moment.

I read it back in 2003, and never forgot it. PFT posts a tribute every year the day he passed away as well. Someone on another board started a topic of who deserves to be in the HOF but wasn't and his was the first name that came time mind.

But I'm guessing there are a lot of athletes with similar stories. Just haven't had any stick in my head like Joe's story has. And maybe it stuck so hard because my daughter was two months old at the time it was the 20 year anniversary and Rick's story was published. I'm thinking that's why it stuck with me so long.

  • Afternoon,

Wow..............What a Hero. Like the article says, compare that to some of the Thugs playing and abusing their status in today's sports world.

    Just Wow !!

WOW! I can't believe that was 29 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. He and I were born in the same year and I remember saying it was hard to believe he died, knowing we were the same age. RIP Mr. Hero.

I know this story has been talked about before on this board and also had an ESPN special, but the young folks may not remember Jack Twyman.

The story of Joe Delaney is both sad and uplifting at the same time.

Learn of young Billy Southworth Jr. He was pictured as a child on his father HOFer Billy Southworth's wonderful E121 card.
