Proof and mint sets breakup

Does anybody think I should break up my mint and proof set collections into individual coin sets and place them into albums for resale. Seems there is little interest in US mint and proof set collections. Louie

My two cents is that selling the individual annual sets would move them much quicker than the whole grouping. It's more likely that someone will need a single date than an entire run of many years. There's a price at which they will all sell. I once had several sets that I was selling that were all common date (57-64) silver sets that I actually did a Dutch auction on the BST, dropping the price $1 per day until someone took them...when the price got low enough they all moved. Of course pictures of the sets would help as well.

I think selling each set individually is better than putting them in albums. You need to put a good price on them, "retail" really won't work.

Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated. I only list the retail prices and asked for offers. Perhaps this was not the proper thing to do. Would it be better just to list the items available and request offers. This 80 year old collector would appreciate any advice. Louie

How many sets are we talking? Just one set from each year or multiples of each year?

In my experience, clad Mint and Proof sets move slooooooow, even at 20-30-40% back of bid. Most of the shops around here offer ~ face or 1.5 - 2X face value on most knowing they will sit in the shop and collect dust. Especially when there are gazillions of them available everywhere.

That said, if I just had to get rid of them, I would do 5 year date run lots and start them at .99 on ebay. Otherwise, I would buy Dansco albums, cut the cellos, and fill them with what I had. Just my humble opinion.

Putting them on Ebay is an option, but even 5 years ago, some of the sets I sold went for less than face, especially the 70s and 80s sets. It's not easy to sell those. The silver sets will sell better than the clad.

If you don't sell on Ebay, maybe someone like Russ, Jeremy, or Shane could do it for you.

You wouldn't make any more selling the coins individually, or in an album, than you would leaving them in the OGP.
