You are right. Some of them were indeed. But at least they began to strike 1964 dated silver coins in 1964. I also believe the US Mint began striking 1965 dated clad coins in very late 1965.
That is why I call them 1964 dated and 1965 dated coins.
Yes. As I recall, the first clad coins started showing up in change around September 1965. I was into roll hunting at the time, and the clad dimes and quarters really stood out in the midst of all that silver. To the general public, they were curiosities for a few weeks, but since the designs had not changed the new coins were accepted without much fuss.
For cents and nickels, the changeover from 1964 to 1965 dated coins did not occur until December 29, 1965, just barely in time for a few of them to be struck with the actual date of issue. The 1965 date on cents and nickels was continued through the middle of 1966, at which time current dating finally resumed.

I remember the first appearance of clads too... at school in the Cafeteria. I also remember not liking them.

talk about being rude.
I was collecting coins starting in 1963 in school, but I am only 39 on my singles profile.
I just found this Trek related thread as I scanned this stuff last night for another forum I thought I would share it here as another nearly completed collection, besides the coin we loves. Many disciplines are the same in both fields. This is my all vintage Star Trek collection of signed items and photographs. I think this is what a decent Trek collection might look like. These are mostly the earliest examples I could find on Trek material (Shatner is, Nimoy etc.). It took me about 8 years or so to get together. I hope you enjoy it. Some are very scarce IMHO in vintage form. Authentication by me.
