Have any rare US coins been melted in light of these comments about finding British gold hoard

Looking at some of the comments below this article, a significant number mention melting the hoard to keep the government or anyone from knowing about it. Some even knowing that the coins are worth much more than the gold.

Seems the laws in Britain are much different than the US which may make a big difference. Looks like they claim all finds then decide what to give you. But with the sentiment the commenters expressed, I wonder if melting has happened with any US coin hoards found.
Would not think that the average person would have easy access to melting gold or silver. Plus it would just be simpler to just sell US coins rather than melting. Though seem to recall that there are some situations of stolen coins where it is suspected that they ended up melted rather than survived as evidence.
Are there any known cases of melted hoards of rare coins in the US or would even be any advantage to do so?

Well knowingly reporting the known unknown melted hoards would defeat the purpose of being unknown.
And the unknown unknown hoards are unknown except to the one who knows.
So maybe there are some publicly known known ones that I haven't heard of that someone knows of to post about.
Regarding the unknown knowns I don't really know what to say.
