Questions about a Vermont Colonial

WhitWhit Posts: 346 ✭✭✭
Good evening, everyone:

Below are photos of a Vermont colonial, part of a small lot of coins that I am currently cataloging and assessing for a friend and neighbor here in northwest CT. The coin is of the vermonts variety, and the date is visible with coin in hand: 1785. Since I’ll be handling the dispersal of the lot which includes this coin, and since I know nothing of grading or pricing colonials, I am wondering how you folks with colonial expertise would grade this one and price it fairly for both buyer and seller.

Thank you!

Whit.

  • Heritage has a pile of these in their archives. If you search for Bressett 1-A there is a VG8 there for comparison.

    Will do. Thank you, DeliaBug.

  • The coin is a RR-3 variety, which is pretty rare. I do not know if it is authentic or not, but if authentic the fair value would be several thousand dollars

  • Grade would be in the VF-20 range.

Goodness, that is quite a reply, and one I was not expecting! Thank you so much, lakeshore, for your assessment. I will advise the owner to spring for
sending the coin to PCGS for authenticity.

    Thanks again.

  • The correct Bressett number for RR-3 is Bressett 2-B
  • Whit - I apologize for the incorrect attribution. I just double checked to see where I went wrong and must have transposed the STELLA . & tip of Q. Thank you for correcting me lakeshore.

  • No problem, Tom. I've been trying to cherrypick one of these for years without success.........

If genuine (I think it is, but cannot be absolutely certain based on the photo) I'd call it VF details, but say it would not be gradable due to environmental damage.

As such, it's not an easy coin to value, and if it were mine I would consign it to auction.
