Letter dated March 28, 1969 from The Department of the Treasury, Office of the Director of the Mint and signed by Eva Adams (the Mint director originally appointed by John Kennedy) In the letter Ms. Adams is denouncing the fact that the Mint ever produced any copper 1943 cents (something that we know today to be totally untrue, as a few of these copper 1943's have since crossed the auction block!) In that era it was common for the Mint to put themselves forward as being infallable and incapable of producing error coins. Quite amusing to think about in hindsight. The exact wording of the letter is as follows:

Your letter of March 21, 1969, with reference to your inquiry on a 1943 one cent copper coin is acknowledged.

There were no copper 1943 one cent coins produced. All pieces produced by the Mint in that year were of steel, zinc coated

Sincerely,

Eva Adams

Director of the Mint

There are a few tape stains where a one cent coin was once affixed (coin also included, see picture, but it is certainly a steel cent of 1943 -- we can speculate that perhaps this coin was once plated with copper and that has worn off) Also, the letter has expected folds both horizontal and vertical but would display nicely framed, if the new owner wishes to do so.
