What would you do? (re: had to open a case/giving feedback)

I buy a semi-expensive card on ebay ($150-range).
Send it to PSA.
PSA says it has been re-colored.
I tell seller (although he has 14-day return policy, this is nearing 30).
He says PSA is out of their mind, throws in a few choice words, and says he's not refunding my $$.
I open a case. He escalates it. I am protected by Ebay's buyer policy, send him back the card and am refunded my money.

Do I leave him negative feedback or just be happy I got my money back and walk away?

(I'm a big fan of the old saying, when you have a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.)

What would you do?

  • I don't like leaving negative feedback. The seller has to really be a jerk about it for me to leave a negative. I have been on eBay since the beginning and have probably only left around 3 negatives. I think I have only left 1 in the last 6 or 7 years. Plus I have seen too many nut jobs out there snap and harass friends over it. It just isn't worth the brief moment of revenge most of the time unless you are one of those internet tough guys image

I am very conservative with leaving negative F/B (I think I have left one in 11 years on eBay). In this case, if the seller would not refund, I would leave a negative. The seller should stand behind what he/she sold and take the loss. I would refund if I was the seller.

    "What would you do?"

I would look at the card when received from the seller to see if it's within a grade or two of the advertised grade and check for alterations. If a buyer is not confident in their ability to perform this task then they should not be buying $150 raw cards on Ebay. If the condition was way off or the card was altered I would immediately return the card under the 14 day return window. If the card looks good to me I would then leave positive feedback for the card. Whatever happens after the seller's listed 14 day return policy is my responsibility.
  • I would leave either no feedback at all or negative feedback- and which one I chose might just swing on what the "few choice words" were, and to whom they were directed.

  • Leave the NEGATIVE. He did refuse to refund when rejected by PSA, and he did use a few choice words.

I would also forward the message with those choice words to ebay, they could ban him. You are not allowed to use that launguage on ebay

Neg. Type up a description of why you're leaving the neg so others can see it.

Ebay doesn't care. I had some idiot send me a profanity laced message when I refused his low-ball offer and I forwarded it to Ebay. Ebay never did a thing.

While I do see the point that "bad" sellers deserve to be negged, I am not convinced you should leave him a negative.

You said it was in your nature to be kind, if so, there's your answer.

However, not knowing the "few choice words" and if they were directed to PSA or you, it is hard to give you a direct answer. In looking over my last few submissions, I am wondering what is going on at PSA myself.

In general, we have plenty of angry internet "tough guys" already.

I agree with digicat, not doing anything increases the chance of this happening again. Next time, it might happen to me. So do me a favor & leave a deserved NEG!

This is how I see it as well, for the most part. If the card was listed with a grade in the title (1964 Mantle- NM, for example), or sold as 'guaranteed unaltered', I would have done what the OP did. Otherwise, I would have eaten it.
  • Where does the seldom used 'Neutral' feedback come in to play. If a transaction does not turn out as simple as a transaction should and there is effort required to remediate. but the end result is the buyer gets money back, that to me seems like a 'neutral'. If the seller though is diligent on the buyer not ending up with a good outcome, neg away.
One question though that I don't know, do neutrals hit the sellers as bad as negs do ?
