For what reason do you ask the question?

Edited to add, do we eliminate references to Teletrade, Heritage and Great Collections?

Because I thought the forum was started to sell items on the forum not somewhere else.

With today's economy I think people need many alternatives to sell the coins.

Personally years ago I didn't have to use eBay to sell coins but I think it help many collectors as myself to sell
and to see what's available out there. eBay offers such an alternative.....IMO

As long as a BST post is clear that it references eBay listings, then I don't have a problem with it.

I don't care about this issue (voted no), but the whole BS&T forum concept should be changed. It's hard to find specific coins and they fall off the first page before you can blink.

Did you ever consider making the ebay seller an offer here for his or her listing less the ebay fees? 7-10% is a deal breaker on many coins!
  • guitarwesguitarwes Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭
I voted no because the 'bay is another avenue that you might like to explore, but I HATE!!!! image when I open a thread expecting to see the coin FSH and all I see is a link to their item on the 'bay without the title indicating such.

Usually if a title just has "For Sale On Ebay", I don't open it at all just because I don't shop much on ebay.

Put simply if you want to remove all references to everywhere else that items might be available just close it down.

Some of my best deals both buying and selling have been from threads referencing eBay and working private deals with sellers and buyers.

I don't sell on ebay, but I also don't have a problem with coins listed on ebay being shown on the BST, too.

So do the people that make the rules let Sportmoderator know and the listing will be removed. It is clearly stated in the post locked at the top.

Right now I have many certified and raw major errors on ebay starting a 99 cents, these are some really nice coins from my personal collection.

Why not let you guys know about them via the BST with ebay in the title?

People here win really cool coins because of the BST / eBay threads.

eBay is the largest coin venue so it would be silly to disallow it.

This. Sometimes best to answer a question with a better question. I like the added benefit of knowing an ebay seller of something I'm interested in is a member here and that there's a possibility that he/she will sell it to me on the BST cheaper.

Tom, I'm sure that this will lessen as sellers realize that Ebay now charges FVFees for cancelling an auction.

So, double listings will likely be less.

The proper method for advertising BST eBay listings is specifically referenced in the top sticky post of the BST forum.

The BST is a place for forum members to advertise that they are selling coins. There are no rules restricting the sales venue.
I like large size currency and silver dollars.

I can see why sellers would want to redirect to eBay, that way,
you have better proof of the sale and only need to collect $$$
throught one venue- makes perfect sence.

Links to ebay may show you a coin that you missed when trolling the bay. It sure saves the BST person a lot of time an space too.

If an ebay seller is showing up in the BST I'm sure he will sell to you through the BST. After all it saves him ebay fees which he should be willing to pass on to you or share with you.

The only thing missing on the BST is a system that ensures the forum membership can only get ripped off one time by a bad seller.

    No.

There is not, and shouldn't be, a forced way unto everyone for just a few.
If it is for sale, or wanted to be bought or traded, then letting folks know on the BST is, imho, ok, no matter the venue.

Some folks are dealers and have their own websites. In the OP way of thinking, those should be banned as well if the person wants you to go to their website to buy it. Same with Heritage, Greatcollections, etc. Should they not be listed/noted on the BST because they are for sale on the other venue? Sometimes, being notified a coin IS for sale is the plus. It isn't like anyone is taking money from CU/PCGS do to sending buying traffic somewhere else.....there is no charge to the BST so nothing is lost.

My only complaint is when people reference ebay (greatcollections/heritage/etc) and only put a link (at best), or just a "search for these dimes/halves/dollars/etc".......I feel that if someone is selling and wants to have folks look, they post a picture of the coin for sale. For me, if they don't, I don't bother clicking the links. If they do, I do click the links and have been known to bid as I am always after nice coins.

That all said, I don't feel it is my place to try to force everyone to do it my way. Obviously, the seller has to decide if they want to make that extra 10-15 second effort in order to get more eyeballs and possible sales, or not.

Same with this "should ebay references be eliminated" thing that pops up every few months.......there are much bigger things to worry about and it isn't something worth trying to police, nor, imho, should it be attempted to be policed.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

<< <i>Because I thought the forum was started to sell items on the forum not somewhere else. >>

Therein lies the problem with most folks.

They "think" this and "think" that with no basis for validation.

Buy/Sell/Trade is exactly for that without restriction. Buying/Selling/Trading

eBay or personal sales shouldn't really matter as what matters the most is that the coin(s) is.are being offered for sale. You just never know when someopne is looking for something specific and if they can buy it here or get pointed over to ebay shouldn't matter.

Besides, eBay offers a somewhat reasonable buyer protection plan which these forums do not. I suppose PayPal could offer some protection but more than once, someone has posted about how they got duped by a seller on the forums. It's a guessing game.

And exactly what does shenanigans, sniping scripts, shilling, etc. have to do with posting an eBay listing on the BST?

At the very minimum, you have a clue who the seller is and what their numismatic connection might be.

If not, then you're pretty much in the same boat as eBay except that there's no buyer protection.

Some of the ebay sellers I've bought from based on BST postings are now in heaven.
Some are in California, Nebraska, New Jersey, Florida, Wisconsin and other parts.

That's a lot of pleasant purchases I would have missed out on if the rules were as discussed here.
