A couple of French gold newps

I've really started liking the design on these so have been picking up a few in 65 when the price is right, these just came in last week. My wife likes the chickens on the reverse, but I quite like the design of Marianne on these.

I like those coins, owned a bunch of them at one time - you could buy them at spot in Paris in several of the banks there.

It's just my way to collect bullion, if I can get the pretty ones for a reasonable premium over spot, already graded, then I do.

Very pretty way to collect bullion too.image
  • As a child I saw a picture of this coin in my father's large Webster's Dictionary. I liked the rooster design and it was on my want list for decades. Now that I can see the the coin, I too, prefer the Marianne side.

    Attractive examples JCMhouston.

Some info just for interest -

There were two "series" of this coin issued -

First Series - Roosters issued in 1898 through 1906, have an edge design of DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE.

Second Series - Roosters issued in 1907 through 1914, have an edge design of LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE.

The Second Series Roosters dated 1907 to 1914, have been officially re-struck and can often be obtained in Unc condition at close to bullion price. The various restrike dates I have read are 1921, post WWII after the gold markets reopened, and 1951 - 1960. Nice condition First Series Roosters and original Second Series Roosters are harder to find.

The First Series and the original Second Series coins were mixed with silver and have a more yellow color. The restruck Second Series were mixed with copper instead of silver and have a slight reddish or copper color to them. That's how you can tell the difference between original and restruck Second Series Roosters.

For further information see "Le franc VI", p.465.
I collect history in the form of coins.

OBTW, There are a lot of counterfeit Roosters floating around. Be very careful if buying them raw.

It's hard to go wrong buying slabbed gold at near melt. A great design and reminds me of an Alice In Chains song.
