Cards That Should Sell For More

Just lounging and thinking of cards of major HOFers that I'm shocked don't sell for significantly more than they do...

In no particular order...

1. 1932 US Caramel Babe Ruth - considering what his RCs command in the hobby stratosphere, and how well his Goudeys sell, I'm shocked this one doesn't command even more than it does-- when it does pop up for sale. The picture on this has such flavor, with the way he is rocking his hat.

2. Bird/Magic RC - PSA 9 can be had for $1200 and there are few gorgeous 9s. 10s go for 10K+ and most I've seen are weak 10s.

3. Dimaggio cards - he and Williams are just two legends. With such stats as the streak and .406 btw them, and the age of their cards, amazed not bigger $$$$
4. Ted Williams cards - see above

5. Yogi Berra - look at how today's players K like mad. Berra had more HR than K in several seasons, with decent power, too (around 20ish HR)

6. Johnny Bench RC and 69. Such a renown player with stats and rings. Still his PSA 9 RC sells for a fraction of the same year Ryan.

7. 1952 Bowman Mantle - my bro snagged a PSA 5 at The National for less than $700. That shocked me. Such a sleeper card.

8. 1954 Bowman Mantle - still can't find this card centered after years of looking.

9. Gehrig cards - the stats and the tragic life story are so compelling, yet can get a nice Goudey with eye appeal, albeit in lower grade, for about 1K. One would thing Lou Gehrig cards would be almost prohibitively expensive. Been eyeballing the 1932 Caramel, but that one actually commands a solid grip of loot.

10. Mays RC.

11. Henderson PSA 9 - considering his career totals and how tough it is to find a premium 9, surprised the truly centered ones don't fetch closer to $500.

12. 51 Mantle - a PSA 5 can be had for like 4k.

Anyways what other cards shock us, or don't seem to get the props the deserve, and are just in generally slept on?

  • Agreed on the Bench rookie. I've always thought that card should be worth a lot more.

1960 and 1961 Fleer Ted Williams.

    1957 T Clemente.

    1955 T Banks.

    1955 T Kaline.

1974-75 Topps Basketball. [Major HOF RCs of Gervin and Walton and last cards of many HOFS - Wilt, West, Oscar, etc]

This is a great way to get put onto new cards. I am guilty of sleeping on those Clementes mentioned. I have to see what that 56 goes for too, what a handsome card.

Agree wholeheartedly about those old basketball cards. Major sleepers in those sets. You feel like you're practically stealing them at what they cost, considering how iconic the players are.

I have to believe the Bird/Magic in 9 will hit 2k one day.

    1986 Fleer Charles Barkley - only $100 for a PSA9, but $1,500 for a Jordan? Seems a little off.
  • lol about the Barkley and Jordan comment.....I take it you're not a basketball fan and didn't get a chance to watch them play in the 80's and 90's?

To stay on topic, there is nothing automatic, except what's hot and in the news. I would think with the pre war cards, there aren't many people in the hobby that WANT to spend 10K on a dull piece of old carboard when the over priced shiny stuff with a band aid and material cut from a jersey found at a thrift shop.
  • Stan Musial cards are in my opinion very under priced, why is this?
  • I think the barkley is undervalued...tough card to find centered.

It seems like whenever this topic is brought up, it's the Bird/Magic rookie that's brought up first. Gotta believe that's going to catch up to the pricing and we start to see it go up soon. Still not changing much. So underpriced

I got to watch much of their careers. It's obvious who was better, I just don't think the price of the Jordan should be 15x the price of the Barkley.

Their stats aren't exactly miles apart.
    MJ - 30.1, 6.2, 5.3, 2.2 = 43.8
    CB - 22.1, 11.7, 3.9, 1.5 = 39.2

Interesting entry. I recently picked this card up.

Would be curious to get some 2nd opinions on the centering for this one. Would this fit the bill of "truly centered"? I'll take anyone's thoughts/criticisms on this one (thanks)....

Rickey is centered l-r with the very slighest of tilt... he's also centered t-b if you consider the top of the banner as the top or 57/43 if you consider his name as the top.

Slight tilt on the Henderson is just a tad distracting, but there's a moderate level of snow in background, too. Still a sharp card..

  • Agree on everything on the list. The 52 Bowman I picked up at the National shocked me too. Under $700 with such great eye appeal seems like a steal compared to the prices on all the other Mantle Cards out there:

I would go one step further with the vintage basketball and say that the entire run of 70's RC are way undervalued.

Also the MJ 1984 Star #101. It still fetches a pretty penny but imagine if PSA ever graded those...that card would skyrocket. It's 2 yrs older than the Fleer and far more rare.

That's a tough call as supply/demand and population also affect price as well as personal preferences (e.g. eye appeal). 1980 Rickey Henderson is rare in PSA 10 as only 10 currently exist. Henderson has crazy star power. But with 1,280 currently in PSA 9 and 11,580 overall graded. The card is not scarce by any means. I can see PSA 10's moving higher to satisfy those with deep pockets who have to have the best, but the rest, I just don't see how unless the craze of the late 80's/early 90's returns to the industry. But I've been wrong b4 too.

Last night a PSA 10 took a nice step up. Personally, if the population doesn't increase too much in the next decade, I think it has a chance to sell for more than it already has in PSA 8,9,10:

1986 Procards Randy Johnson - First Card

170 graded overall; 12 in 10; 60 in 9 (includes the one I have that PSA is currently fixing their flip error from a different Randy Johnson on the Phoenix Firebirds to Unit West Palm beach ;-)

Rarer than the Pittsfield Maddux population which means either 1) they made less Big Unit west palm team sets than the Pittsfield Maddux team sets or 2) those sitting on them haven't gotten them graded yet. My guess is the former as it's 26 years later and we already know who the superstars were from that era.

Thanks for the opinions on the Henderson, all. image

Regarding cards that should sell for more, I might also add some Rogers Hornsby cards to the list. His name rarely gets mentioned with all the greats like Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Mantle, etc., but the guy put up some incredible career and season numbers.

  • For what this seller is offering this Trout rookie, you can get probably every card the OP posted

    Mike Trout Auto

I dont know. To me this is bordering exploitation. I understand the seller is not expecting 50K, but sees what kinds of offers he gets. But even a thousand dollars trumps many vintage graded cards. Its a weird business....

I also agree on the basketball, the1969 Topps Alcindor rookie to me is a great card, it rarely appears in high grade.

I really like the 1958 Topps football Jimmy Brown rookie, while it has gone up I feel it's still undervalued.

I'd go with Wilt Chamberlain cards (especially those from the '70s).
