You'll notice that the guide prices are close until the AU level and then the scarcer curl 2 takes off. There are only two die marriages for the curl 2. O.146 (R2) and O.147 (R4).

If you look at auction results for these two varieties you'll see that not many have sold lately below AU. So the pricing data is pretty old for XF and VF. PCGS has only graded 52 VF+XF curl 2's.

IMO the curl 2 should carry a premium across all grades. There is a remarkable difference in the PCGS pop reports. Curl 2 = 133. Square 2 = 2,152.

The 1827 Curl 2 is difficult to locate in nice XF or better. "R2" is misleading due to the limited number of die marriages. It is not a very available variety. I find that VF and XF examples bring big premiums on eBay at the very least due to the popularity of the series and the large number of people who do not have one. Another example is the 1828, Curl 2, with knob, which is even tougher.

There are points on the supply and demand curves where the "real world" trumps all else.

How many are actively searching for a curl 2 in VF? Not many.

Like most, I would take one at a price, but there are so many other things that I (and everybody else) truly need or would like to have that I choose to do without, even at current price levels.
