Anybody else love Platinum?

My main focus in the last few years has been fractional Platinum Eagles. After reading Eric Jordan's Book I'm a believer that fractional platinum eagles (proof and burnished) are way to go. Now that the mint has stopped making fractional platinum eagles it makes my decision even easier.

My favorite is the quarter ounce platinum. I also love the burnished coins. I've got a few sets competing on the registry and few not graded yet. =)

Time for some Platinum coin porn. Here are some of my 1/4 oz Platinum eagles I just uploaded to Youtube…. =)

I'd like it a lot more if it would get back above the price of gold! It has never really caught on. If it ever does, there is much room for upside especially in the coins you mention. Just don't know how many years/decades you will have to wait for them to catch fire.

What I find really interesting is that most times I go to a coin show there is a lack of platinum coins available. If I do find some it's usually one or two dealers. When I ask dealers if they have any they usually say no and when they do they get rid of it as quickly as they can. To me that's the perfect recipe for collectors to chomp at the bit for these in the future. Only time will tell. Meanwhile I'm accumulating as much a I can. =)

I actually like the designs, and given their precious metal content, I hope to start working on a set soon.

I think the collector base will always be very small for a couple of reasons. First would the cost of them, and second the fact that the base metal was never used for a circulation coin.

I agree the cost is high and this is why I think the 110 and 14 oz plat proof eagles will appreciate faster.

In regards to the metal not being used for circulation:

Eric has a great argument for this in his book. To summarize he states that people that grew up collecting the reverse changing state quarters will want to collect in the same way when they grow up. Hence the reverse changing platinum series is the high end expression of that. Who am I to argue with millions of people that have already been programmed. =)

Also in my opinion the risk is low. I put together a short set of MS6667 (66.284) walking liberty's. with a melt of let's say $10 each. I would argue this set will probably barely keep up with inflation. That set cost me more than putting together a 14 Platinum proof set in PCGS PR70. The melt of that set is roughly right under 5K. Now I know this is subjective depending on the grades and coins etc... but my point is that risk IMHO is much lower. Worst case scenario you fall to the melt value.

This way I get to participate in a few ways:

1: Worst case scenario sell for bullion (lord help us)
2: When collector demand does figure itself out here I can appreciate for collector value and rest assured that I always have the bullion value to fall back on.
3: Also when the economy picks up Platinum will reign again as the king over gold. I get to buy Platinum now at a discount to gold. =)

I have collected the Proof PAE's from the get-go. I collected the fracs too for awhile but that got to be too much and now I just get the 1oz.

Platinum is pretty and rare and useful and absolutely unsaleable in a coin shop.

NOBODY wants any. (Except the bitty witty ones for the design)

Gold and silver.....sure.... but just TRY to find customers for plat in any quantity.

    Platinum is very illiquid.

I like my platinum coins. I had a nice type set (1 of each design and denomination including the LOC bimetal) until the mint stopped making fractionals. I was happy to see the bimetal library of congress as well as the current 1oz plat proof on display at the philly us mint when I visited a couple of weeks.

I agree I rarely find any platinum at coin shops.
To me that sounds like a recipe for many future years of highly appreciating Platinum Eagles. =)

I like them, but only have 7 platinum coins - all quarter and half ounces. Too bad I didn't buy more of them when they were originally issued.

They even make Plats in a size that Dimeman would like, so he has no reason not to like them.

No it doesn't. NCLT in coinage form is still coin. Created and released by the US Mint, they are perfectly fine right here in this forum image

That said, I don't have any. I "kind" of want one, as a type sort of thing, but I don't feel the allure since the price is up there and none of our history has had circulating coinage made from platinum.
They may be there for the investor, or even a collector of things stamped in coin denom/form, but they don't hold real history of our country, so I am ok not having them.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

So beautiful, thanks for the wonderful pics. I thought I would re-chime in here almost a year later. It's amazing to see the prices on fractional platinum and all platinum eagles nowadays. Backing up the truck as they say. =) I decided to continue to complete my PCGS 70 Proof set ( about 12 coins away) and mainly focus on keys in 69- and 70's at good prices imho. The 1/4 oz's are my favorite. I absolutely love the design of these coins. I'm definitely an Eric Jordan follower I must have read that book about 5-6 times over. I learn something new everytime.

Ohh and of course the W burnished eagles, I have lots of burnished plats =). I recently acquired four more 2008-W 1/4 burnished coins for an average price of $700. 1, PCGS 70, 1 NGC 70, 1 NGC 69 and 1 raw. How can you not stack these beauties up.

Yes, it does. Platinum is a main focus in my collection. I also am working on walking liberty halves, I have a decent short set on the registry still working on moving that set up currently 6th. I have plenty of gold and silver too. =) I guess for me it's slightly reverse.

Platinum doesn't get any love at any of the coin shows. you may find 1-2 dealers that might have some but none that really specialize in Platinum. I ask them if they ever get any proofs or W's and they tell me they just wholesale it. I've even had a dealer at a show have someone trying to sell platinum point them towards me. I was able to get a 2005 and 2003 1/10th Proof in OGP for $20 over melt.

I show some of the platinum eagles to my co-workers and family and most don't even know that the US Mint even makes these coins. Heck a few weeks back I got a 2007 $25 Platinum Proof NGC PF70 for $355.00, $5.00 over on Ebay. =) Everyone hating platinum seems to be a gift. When reading the board archives from 2007 it was amazing how much interest was here. I'm guessing the wild swings in Platinum shook out a lot of interest and upset a lot of people. Since I'm thinking longer term I'm not worried, I know these coins will get nothing but love in the future.

The reverses of the plat proof series are the best artwork the Mint has generated since the early 1900 heyday. hands down. I love this series. Thanks to those putting up the pics!

They are tough, tough, tough to find, though. The price of platinum has fallen so far in recent years that I'm sure most of the original buyers are sitting on them, even if they were inclined to sell. I, too, have found dealers' tables bereft of but a few stragglers here and there, for years.

I've been looking for a 2008 $100 PCGS MS70 since 2008, with no luck at all!

I hear you the bullion issues are tough in MS70.

Maybe a few of us platinum collectors can take down this set, of course for the right price, Wow. It does have the coin you are looking for and a few others.
