Teddy Balgame - Cards Undervalued?

Just cleaned out my paypal account on this 1939 PB rookie. You all know I'm a sucker for centering.

Now the card was still pricey for such a low grade, but the rookies of his contemporaries are in several cases multiples in price.

Why no love for Ted cards? Wasn't he one of the greatest?

  • Bobs that is a very nice williams rookie for the given grade from the scan it looks like it could bump to a 4. The 39 Playballs dont seem to be as in demand as the 41 set is. I think its due to the 39 set being bland looking with just black and white photos

I dont know but from my experience.
Almost every Ted Williams card i have bought I have either lost money on or luckly broke even on when selling them at a later date.
The only card I do see staying stronge is his 1939 Play ball. It hasnt gone up much but it hasnt gone down either. His Topps cards were popular in the late 90s and early 2000 but since then Ive watched them go unsold or down in price.
I think his 1939 Play Ball is undervaluded but I dont think it will spike anytime soon. The set is kind of unpopular with collectors being black and white and other issues. I like the set and it can be made for very cheap if you take your time.
Ill try and make it later on in life, but for now Im staying away from old Teddy cards.
    Great centereing on that gem!!

I'm a Yankee fan and I have always been blown away by Ted Williams' numbers. Especially in conjunction with his military service, and how it took AB's away (imagine today's coddled princesses having to leave their gigs for combat?!).

I have always been bullish on his 1954 Wilson Franks card. It is pretty rare and a sweet pic. Was discussing with board members which to go for of his key issues, and for me it came down to the RC and the Wilson. Finally threw down for a PSA 4 a couple months back.

I believe if anyone ever flirts again with .400 into the waning days of a season, interest in Williams cards will get a bump.
  • I think he's hurt by the fact that he didn't win a title. Saying that, I don't think Joe Dimaggio gets much love either, except for his ultra rare minor league cards.
