PCGS:Bring back the 4 coin holder

DCWDCW Posts: 7,598 ✭✭✭✭✭
Why did PCGS stop using the multi coin holder? Remember seeing a 4 coin set of platinum proofs in that style of holder, and it really popped. I can think of a few other scenarios in which id shell out the money. I wonder why they stopped and if they'd consider slabbing more by request.

Is it possible that they discontinued the multi-holder due to CAC?

If three of four coins passed the CAC test but the fourth didn't, the set wouldn't sticker. I don't know, I'm just throwing it out there.

I doubt very much they care what CAC will do with their holders, but you bring up an interesting point. Would CAC slap 4 stickers on these if they were all inspected to standards? That'd be pretty comical

  • I'm guessing there is not enough interest to justify spending the cost to produce the item. I don't really know, but I'm guessing that's why they don't have it and why they won't bring it back.

Edit, Plus why 4? They got 2. could just as easily be 5 instead of 4.

John, I believe they did away with the multi-holders prior to CAC being formed.
Not sure if there was enough volume to make it worth their while, or any other issues.....I think, near the end if not the whole time, only bulk submitters/dealers may have been able to get the holders (I could be wrong, but I recall that happening to the presidential dollars....only those submitting 100+ were able to get them, I think. I was getting these for my son but kind of stopped a few years ago).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

If they were making money on them do you think they would of quit making them?

Edit to add that you may want it but I would never think of buying one of them so maybe more think as I do that think as you do.image

My recollection is also that only bulk submitters could get them at PCGS but anyone could get one-offs ATS.

Also, for PCGS multi-holders, I've only seen ones where all the coins have the same grade and the holder has a single cert number. This probably made them more ideal for bulk submissions and less ideal for stickers. The ATS ones could have different cert numbers and grades per coin.

Here are 4-coin and 5-coin holders for 2012:

    Does CAC even sticker moderns?

Any multi-coin holders that aren't filled with moderns?

Yes they do, but not the PDs, SHQs, APEs, AGBs, etc. I've seen in PCGS multi-holders.

There are ATS, but I think the bulk-submission requirement for PCGS limited PCGS multi-holders to moderns.

It was too expensive to produce.

Here is a multi coin holder from across the street that would have been nice to own.

It comes from this June 2010 article by Greg Reynolds on coinlink.com (before it became coinweek.com).

As the article notes they were re-slabbed into single coin holders for the auction. Guessing that the sledge hammer method was not used to open it. I wonder if the empty holder was saved or not.

Here's a link to the Stack's Bowers sale results for them:
