1987 Lincoln Cent, missing copper layer or post mint plating?

It weighed in at 2.6, redbook says it should be 2.5. Looking carefullly at the pock marks, I saw no sign of copper plating.

I don't think it's 'right', but figured I'd post it and see what I missed

If the true color of the coin is
    'silver'-ish, or nickel color, then
    it's without a doubt Plated -

(I say 'if' because on my screen,
the surfaces look like a pale copper
    color)

The other rim damage, and dark
    areas are all post-minting damage,
and I'm certain, from the 'shiny'
surface, that your cent has been
plated after it got into circulation.

  • Even though it looks plated to me (with some white metal)....I have heard of people stripping the copper off of post-1982 zinc core cents with a special cyanide that only dissolved copper...

Theodore Gray (writes for popular mechanics I believe) has one on his site:

    Looks plated not stripped.

Since it's already damaged why not take an xacto or something and give it a test scrape on the rim?
