How to sell PSA graded packs that have developed small rips?

Just asking for advice on how to sell slabbed packs that have developed small tears because of PSA's poor holders. I'd like to sell my 1970's collection but want to make sure they buyer knows what they are getting. Over all the packs look great but some rips have occurred in some of them.

I would say just mention in the listing that a tear(s) occurred in the wrapper after holdering and provide clear scans to illustrate. If it's an unopened collector bidding, I'd prepare for a lower final bid, but some people buy packs to open, too, in which case that issue won't be as much of a factor.

  • The same way you just told us and even put the little circle on the small tear, I don't see why you cant do the same on the listing. You just answered your own question.
  • so the recommeded listing way would be...

    1970 Topps Baseball Wax Pack PSA 9 - ????

What would you suggest listing the title as???

or should I just try to sell it as a registry set? I do currently have the #3 spot and only off the leader by .2

I would list the item in the title as PSA "9".

In the description I would mention IN BOLD AND CAPS that there are tears in the wrapper. You should also add additional pics clearly showing the tears.

Do you think individual is the way to sell or should I sell as a lot and keep the registry packs together?

I would sell individually for the best return.

The tears will hurt sales and I agree should be mentioned in the auction description.

Another option is to just consign them all with probstein and let him run with them......

    Jason,

I agree with the above comment. Selling all in one lot will not maximize your profit.

jason you might want to break them up i think you will do much better on them if you asked me...you might also want to try and sell some on the boards here and save some fees there are many collectors on here with me being included who might be interested...terry
  • thanks to everyone that has PM'ed me about these packs... I need to move them so I think I'll just list them on ebay and let the market make the call on the price of the packs. I would hate to lose money on these and I also do not want to over charge anyone on the boards.

I think PSA should stop slabbing wax packs until they resolve this issue. It's a crying shame that so many scarce high grade packs are getting destroyed due to their holders. Even with improvements to the holder, it still happens far too often.

PSA doesn't guarantee wax packs? A pack with any type of tear can only grade a 7 at best... if the pack was a 9, it obviously didn't have any tears at the time it was holdered.

I've had much greater success with the latest holders they're using for wax packs. The older ones with the tabs were prone to wrapper tears if the gum was loose in the pack.

It's a crying shame, because I'd be all over the 1971 wax pack if not for the tear.

I've been looking for a nice 1965 baseball wax pack to complete my graded 60s run but the ones I've come across have gum tears in the side. Even if I find one intact, I'm afraid to buy it and have it tear during transit to me.

Unlike most of the GAI holders, they are not tight against the pack and therefore the gum has room to move around. During shipment the corners of the gum often tear into the wrapper.

Early this year, I sent a few 1977 packs in to get graded. They came back with the packs shrink wrapped in a baggie type thing before being encapsulated. I don't know if that was a test because since then, I have gotten a 1972 OPC wax pack graded that did not have the inner baggie. Here is a '77 pack:

  • that baggie rap looks bad.

looks better than a 1 inch tear going down both sides of the pack. And the case says GEM MINT.

true... but they should be able to come up with a better case!

The problem is not as pervasive as it once was with the newly designed holder. I have graded about 20-25 wax packs in last 6 mos and don't recall seeing any tears after holdering.

Early bidding action indicates that you might be pleasantly surprised. Not all collectors are bothered by a small tear in the wrapper, though I'd expect that they
will bid as if the pack were a lower grade than Mint 9.

I'm hoping the registry people that would like to move up will continue bidding them up image

In this case buy the grade not the pack!
