This made my weekend!!!

So check this out....I'm just messing around around on the puter while watching baseball and football tonight and I come across this auction with about 5 minutes left to go. Of course the price jumped up over $100. in the last minute alone, but I managed to put in a bid higher than anyone else and walked away with this FANTASTIC stuff! To be honest I'm not sure what I'm more eager to hold in my hands....the Ryan rookie or the ball. Either way I'm thrilled!!!

Ryan

OK so I'm new to this site....still trying to figure out how to attach a link. image

It could be just me, but the left and right borders of the Ryan look very short, like the card has been trimmed. Especially when you compare it side by side with the Mets team card. Hoping it isn't, but I would be concerned with the "off" grading company GMA.

  • Now that you mention that it does appear that way next to the team card. Hopefully it's just some sort of illusion, I'll definitely be measuring them both when they arrive. And yes, the GMA thing sucks I was planning on sending it to PSA when it does arrive.

    Thanks for noting that.

I hear out of the two main graders at GMAgrading that George Stephanopoulos is much tougher on corners than Robin Roberts. Anyway, hope these cards are legit and unaltered.
  • Not to knock on gameusedhoop but a lot of people on here seem to think that just because a card is OC, that its automatically trimmed. I don't believe that's the case with the Ryan - I just think its OC like MANY of the 68's which is why one with great centering, it always sells for a premium. Also the fact that this guys is selling a bunch of other Mets cards in 68 and 69 leaves me with little suspicion that the Ryan is a fake. Just seems like a Mets fan in general who is selling his cards to raise some cash.

Nice pick up but let me add that I would only purchase from PSA and BGS holders in the future. These 3rd party grading companies have proven to be unreliable when it comes to authenticity and the grading standard in the market.

It has NOTHING to do with the fact that is off centered, it has everything to do with the width of the borders in relation to a similar horizontal card like the Mets team.

The fact that he has many Mets cards does not mean the all came from the same source either. There could be 20 cards from 18 different sources, and the increase in $$ someone would get by trimming a Ryan is a risk many "weekend warrior" dealers are willing to take. I am not accusing the seller of anything, it's just that the Ryan looks short to me, and I'm just letting the OP know that he should take a real good look at it, as return time is limited.
  • I hope you're right on the authenticity Foo. I don't believe I would've purchased the card without the ball and without the story behind the ball. Considering those along with the perfect feedback for the seller I decided the risk was worth putting in such a low bid. And since I only had 5 minutes from view/bid there wasn't a whole lot of time left to second-guess myself.

Hopefully everything comes back great. I'll update you guys when they arrive.

  • Personally, I'd never buy anything not graded by PSA, SGC or BVG. Their is almost always a reason why people go with the unknown graders.

    Good luck with the pickup.

    Hello RyanAd,

I hope you found a gem there.

I don't know about size, etc. but here is my Ryan to compare to.

Not to rain on the OP's parade here but if anyone believes these cards are going to get into PSA holders then its an absolute longshot, bottom line a Ryan rookie would already be in a PSA Holder if it could.

Best of luck though I hope it works out for you.
  • Yes gentlemen, I understand that if someone wanted to take the time to rip somebody off by trimming a Ryan rookie and sending it in to GMA to get it graded that it is possible I've been taken here. But I can't help to look at the facts here....

You have the cards. Yes, I recognized before bidding that it was a Ryan rookie graded by GMA. That tells me one of two things: Either a) something is not right about the card, or b) Someone that really doesn't know much at all about the cards made a bad decision and sent it in to GMA to get graded. So then I looked at the other cards in the lot. A Mets team card in EX-MT and a Hodges in NM.....would someone that knew a lot about cards REALLY send these in to be graded??? Again, I'm just speculating but if i had to guess I would say not.

So OK I've gone with an assumption that the seller isn't too knowledgeable on card collecting do's/dont's (whether that's wrong or not). Next I look at the ball. There's a ton of signatures on it and I'm no handwriting expert so again it's impossible to say for sure, but there's at least an entertaining story behind the ball from a seller with 100% positive feedback. And when you compare the Hodges auto to others that are out there it is either actually legit or the person that signed the ball spent a ton of time researching their autographs and did a fabulous job at faking them. Someone may indeed be trying to rip me out of $400. but they've put a ton of work into it and their forgeries look great! To me the ball alone was worth the auction price or at least darn close to it with Seaver's and Ryan's autos.

Let us not forget....in this day and age with both Paypal and Ebay bending over backwards for buyers it's pretty easy to get my money back if indeed something in the auction is not legit and I can prove it. I dropped what I thought was a pretty low bid for everything and I'd definitely do it again for a chance to win this stuff.

Look at it this way. If it's genuine but trimmed, get it signed by Ryan (and Koosman, if you like). Both do TTM for a fee. It qualifies for PSA/DNA red flip Authentic that way.

Does someone with more knowledge about vintage baseballs than I have know whether a HAITI baseball is era-appropriate for a Hodges signature?

  • Good ideas and a good question about the Haiti ball. Here's what I myself: According to this website if you were a kid in the 60's and 70's you played with a baseball made in Haiti because back then all baseballs were made in Haiti. Here's the link:

  • Update:

Thanks to all for your opinions and thoughts. The Ryan rookie had indeed been trimmed. With that in mind, this was one of the best if not the best sellers I'd ever dealt with on Ebay. I'd spoken with him both by phone and messaging several times before the item ever even arrived. I do not at all believe he had done the trimming. He refunded my money promptly as everything was sent back. He also was indeed the one that sent the card in to the grading company and has been trying to get with them about the grading of the card. I'm curious to hear what they have to say about it.

The card was only short by about 1/32"....not very easy to see....but definitely should've been picked up by a grading company.

Needless to say I was pretty bummed....but lucky to have dealt with such a fair seller.

They sell there holders to the public so any di*k head can print out a label and insert a fake card into it. What I am trying to say is it might not be graded by the grading company that is on the label.
