my 58/57 topps (2nd round poppage)

I mentioned on here a couple weeks ago that I had come across a group of 57-58 topps through a friend of a friend. I finally was able to meet up with the guy today and pick them up. I'm still sorting these, working on the 58's first. It's not a complete set, but I think it is very close. the set was built by a 13-14 year old back when they came out. The centering tends to be all over the place but there are some pretty nice cards mixed in. If anybody who is familiar with the set has any suggestions about specific cards (other than the big stars) that I should consider for grading I'd appreciate advice. I've never had many cards graded but I think there are some here that merit it. More scans later, but have scanned a few as I sort them out.

yeah the 58's were in an old clark candy bar tray that held 24 clark bars and says "Clark Eclipses All" and that box was inside an old shoe box. No sleeves, no toploads...just been in this box since 1959. He built the 57 set, and almost finished the 58 (think he is just missing a couple SP's) Then there are a handful of 59 Reds since they were his team. Then, he discovered girls and the cards got stashed away. Mom threw away the boxes with all the extras in them but the two sets survived.

Wow, that Mantle All-Star looks like it could be an 8. Maris a 7.

Get the puppies graded asap.

Great Pick up. Nice to know that there are cards this beautiful out there that are still ungraded and in the wild.

I'd be tickled if the Maris could get a 7. I've been wanting to upgrade the one in my Indians team set

I'm not real experienced and getting things graded but I guess it's time to learn

I would think upgrading would be based on how the card looked to your old maris.

I signed up for the collectors club (first time) Can I send that Mantle in as one of the free 15 or will they have a problem with that? I don't really know what they use for their value number. any advice? i know it's suppose to be less than $500 but is that raw value? it changes quite a bit by grade.

Yes, send in both Mantles. Put $350 on the AS and $475 for the regular. Just a guess on my part.

Well, I sent in a group to be graded and I don't have them back yet but the grades are out. Overall, not bad for my first real sub. I really felt the Wilhelm and the Mantle all-star were clearly nicer than any of the others I subbed. I dunno, everybody I showed agreed (except the graders) I really thought they were a lock for 8. I sometimes wonder if the graders just get in a rut and assume they are about the same quality as the others in the group. The good news is I got what I expected on a couple of the more expensive cards. The 57's were lower grades but I assumed they would run about one grade below the 58's. Not thrilled with the grade on the drysdale, I really felt it was a 7. Anyway I can put some scans up when they send them back to me. The Wilhelm and Maris are PC but other than that I could be convinced to part with any of these for the right price or trade.

Edit:Not thrilled with the grade on the drysdale, I really felt it was a 7.

Look at the corners on that Drysdale (especially the bottom ones) and now look at the Maris's corners that came back a 7. Id say a 6 on that Drysdale is right on the money.

got my package from PSA so I have the first few back. I still think a couple of them ended up in the wrong holder but overall pretty happy. Some scans in the new cases (had a few requests)

grades popped tonight, these are more from that 57/58 set I picked up last month so I thought I'd dig up this old thread. A few of the grades have me scratching my head but what can you do...overall I think I didn't do too bad. Not sure what happened with some of the 58 commons as I tried to be pretty picky. I thought they all had a shot at 8, but guess the graders disagreed. Must have missed a crease on the 58 Score because I thought it was 8 worthy and 3 grades is a big miss. At least this time a couple graded higher than I thought so that helps balance things out. If anybody is interested, I would consider trading for Indians/Browns I need
