  • not specifically seeing it in the images, but is it die clash? that's not too uncommon for the type.

Mexico city was not overstriking their milled issues. That does look like a die clash ghosting of the "2R" from the reverse though.
  • I'll take some better pictures of the under typing tonight.

    I see clashed dies also

  • oh, I see what you're talking about now in the legend... yeap, that's die clash - see how the stop lines up with the stop on the reverse? I think that's the denomonation followed by the first assayer initials.

very cool that it's so pronounced in that singular area. Almost feel blind for not seeing it before.
  • That is definitely die clashing- 2R FM.
Persuing choice countermarked coinage on 2 reales.

Enjoyed numismatic conversations with Eric P. Newman, Dave Akers, Jules Reiver, David Davis, Russ Logan, John McCloskey, Kirk Gorman, W. David Perkins...
  • If I could change topic matter?

1808 - 8 Reales in Choice BU , it's from a recent hoard find, I trust it's authenticity. Buy price for me to acquire is 1K. I've checked eBay prices, however I'm traveling and cannot research further.

If you please, is this a reasonable price for a Choice Brilliant Uncirc. Coin?image

1808 is a common year, if we're talking about Mexico City. However, if the coin is MS64 or higher, once certified, should be worth over a grand. MS63 is around a grand.

Which hoard is the coin from?
  • The hoard was not disclosed. I did inquire.

There is also a 1809, in BU. Is that a common date? When u say Mexico City, this coin has pillars on thee reverse and bust figure on the obverse, right?

I'm not that familiar with dark side coins, spend most of my time on the PM forum.

This design was used in several different countries. The mint mark for Mexico City is a large "M" with a small "o" above it.

edited to add... in the third picture in the original post, the mm is at about 8:30 on the coin.
