Dallas ANA - Will be my first coin show - Updated

I plan on attending the Dallas ANA Show next week. My wife and I will drive up from Houston Thursday Night and be there Friday and Saturday.

For a first timer, what should I expect?

I know I want to stop off and say hello to any on here that post. Kinda put a face to a name.

I will be dropping some Coins off with Todd at BluCC for photos. I would would like to get some opinions from a few dealers on my Morgans to see if they would be worth trying for the AU58+ Grade in my Everyman set.

Also, my wife is in love with Mercury Dimes, so I will be required to purchase a few of those for her for making the trip. I also will be purchasing a few Morgans to fill wholes in my registry.

What is some etiquette that I should know or I am assumed to know?

Observing the usual rules of polite society is sufficient.

But there will always be a few people who have made a conscious decision to be crabby. Some are dealers, some are collectors.

So, if you notice irritable behavior, please don't think you are necessarily doing anything wrong.

As Glenn said, CRO's article has a lot of great information!

Since Todd will be at my table (#230), be sure to say hi to me and, if you like, allow me to take your photo for my show report!

  • It's been my experience that some dealers are real helpful and some don't want to give you the time of day, no matter how busy they are. I've always wondered at shows why some dealers just ignore you, and their not even busy.

Also lunch time is not very good. They don't like to put down their sandwich....ha

More than anything else, you should prepare for sensory overload - you'll see more coins, dealers and collectors in one place than you ever knew existed.

You might want to make a point of doing a lot of looking before you buy anything, at least until the initial "shell-shock" wears off.

Good advice and remember to stay on track it is easy to stray when so much is available.

I know I'm late, but I was just quoting CRO's post and agreeing with it, as I had little further to say.

Develop a focused plan of what you want to buy and sell beforehand, and stick to it. You will be overwhelmed with the number of distractions otherwise. Also, don't expect to find loads of reasonably priced material at a big show. Dealers pay huge prices for their tables up front and they need to sell to the public at retail. The majority of what you will see is sitting in the dealers' cases unsold for a good reason. Many of the bargains and cherrypicks disappear during the dealer day and you will never see them as a collector. There is no shame in coming home without making a purchase if nothing floats your boat. I have done exactly that at Baltimore more than once, and it is better than forcing a purchase just so you can have a souvenir.

If you just can't wait to look at coins first thing in the morning, auction lot viewing almost always starts an hour or two before the bourse opens, and it's never very crowded then. You'll be able to look at the Heritage internet session (lots 7001 and up) as well as those other lots that haven't sold yet on Friday and Saturday. Browse online to see what you might want to view and then pore through the offerings at lot viewing to help develop your eye for quality.

It did seem sparse today, but I got there later in the day and will go there again on Friday. I'm getting a monster Morgan from Larry Shapiro (PQPeace) and looking at other possibilities too, hopefully I can get those all figured out. It was nice to run into Charmy (PennyLady), finally meet Liz from JJ Teaparty and others who are only voices on the pohone or mouse clicks on their sites.
  • My wife and I are enjoying the show.

Dropped some Coins off with Todd for photos. Saw Charmy, but she was busy.

Spent some time with Glen Holsonbake.

So far, we have had a good time.

  • Thank you to all that I saw and spoke with at the Dallas ANA Show.

My wife and I spent some time with Glen Holsonbake on Saturday while waiting for my PCGS Submission. It was great discussing coin collecting with him. I even purchased a Barber Dime and a Liberty Nickel.

I also spent time talking with Charmy and purchased my first two Pennies from her.

Todd took 20+ pictures for me. I cannot wait to update the pictures in my Morgan Everyman set.

I had a chance to speak with Laura from Legend and Larry Shipiro.

After speaking with U.S. Coins, I will probably go by thier B&M Location a few more times. Maybe even take my kids there if our schedules can line up.

I even sold some of my spare coins to multiple dealers. Definately paid for my trip.

Unfortionately, not many Morgans or Peace dollars that fit my Everyman sets.

We had a good time and will definately will be attending other shows.
