Pros and Cons of Pedigree Collections

After reading the SMR cover article on the Black Swamp find, I was wondering what you guys thought of pedigree designations on collections. Clearly, there can be a benefit to the seller when it connotes some notoriety like, say, "McNall/Gretzky," but have any of you experienced a case in which the pedigree actually diminished the selling price?

Any thoughts on when it may/may not be an attribute?

Harris Collection T206's have a negative connotation that causes some to stay away.
The Mr. X pedigree was pretty ridiculous and became such a joke that I'm sure it kept some from bidding.

On the other hand I would tend a pay a bit more for cards pedigreed from hobby pioneers like Richard Nagy and Lionel Carter.

Good topic. The 'McNall/Gretsky' thing is a prime example. That T206 is tainted and worthless. (well duh. not worhtless but) What is the 'next' level Wagner in line to take dominance, anyone know ? With PSA admitting they graded the card knowing it was trimmed and not designating that, it actually taints any/all PSA graded high end cards. I strongly feel pedigree grading is a minus. Iincluding that soo fake lame black swamp find. (I would not have said that previous to learing PSA actually tainted the greatest card known to man, but they did)
