PVC Boxes

Hello all. I was wondering if it was okay to store coins that are encapsulated, in rolls, or small mint issued boxes, in plastic containers (such as Sterilite containers). The coins will never be physically touching the plastic.

Does PVC only affect the coin when the material is directly against the coin? Has anyone ever had issues storing coins this way? Thanks!

Yes, I've had trouble. I had a few sets of modern coins in mylar cardboard 2X2's stored in what must have been PVC pages and I didn't look at them for a few months. Well, a lot of the coins developed a light haze and even a little green! I would suggest you not store them in PVC boxes.

Food safe or use plastic containers contain no PVC.

I don't have direct experience, but would echo the above sentiments. Best to look for an alternative.

Honestly I don't believe you'll have any issues with Sterilite containers -- different animal than PVC pages. However, if it makes you uncomfortable, you might try an alternative such a metal, or sturdy cardboard box. Perhaps more important than the container, is the microclimate you maintain around the container. To wit: don't keep it in damp basements where moisture abounds -- also not the best idea (for paper mint products and boxes) to keep it in a hot attic where temps might reach 100 degrees consistently. If I were forced to choose, however, I'd certainly take the hot attic route for coinage vs the basement!

Thanks for the replies guys. One of the reasons for using the (mostly)airtight Sterilite box was for the humidity control inside the box. I have found that objects have a pretty steady environment inside vs the cardboard box. I think I will just keep coins that have their own
capsules in the box for now.

That should work fine -- you can also employ silica gel inside the box, and wherever it's stored, use some damp-rid to absorb excess moisture from the air. A dry environment won't hurt coins, but an overly moist one might. It also might depend on how often you plan to go through the box -- fairly frequently, or sock it away for months at a time? Good luck!
