Another MS-68 Mercury Pickup

These seem to be coming out of the woodwork, and I am buying them. May be tempting me to put together a Mercury Dime Registry set.

It's not a screamer as based on the images it could just as well be in a MS64 holder.

Here is the MS68 that was in my set. Image by PCGS and can be found in PCGS Coin Facts

I was thinking a Genuine holder at best.

I have held way too many Mercs to agree with this. Broadstruck, if you EVER see dimes like this in MS64 Holders please let me know! I'll pay you MS65 money. image

MS64 and MS65 Mercs have a lot of hits on them. This one does not. How you can say this is beyond me.

Granted, the photos may not show the color or luster the best which is understandable but in regards to hits....geez this is a MS68 coin.

    Congrats on a nice coin!

I remember years ago gazing at a few PCGS MS68 blast white Roosevelt dimes in a dealer's case at Long Beach and being extremely impressed with the quality and eye appeal.
There truly is a wide distance between an MS68 and an MS67, it wasn't even funny.

Yet, no matter what- I can't say or see the same in the Mercury dime series.
    I wish I could explain, but can't.

Very nice virtually mark free 68 and I love the scattered toning.

    Beautiful coin!

MS mercs in 68 don't strike me the same way a Morgan in 68 would.
I like mercs, but, like silver Roosies, I prefer them with some nice color. Not streaking, not mild, but nice.

That said, if you like it, then all is good. If, as you say, they "seem to be coming out of the woodwork", then I would wonder if that is the start of a price drop and if the series is becoming a bit unpopular image, or if they were at a level that wasn't justified. I don't have any in MS68, as I wouldn't pay the 4 figures for the nicely toned ones when I saw them.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think the problem with the OP's coin are the pics rather than the coin. The pics look washed out and lifeless, but I'd bet it has much more lustre and flash in hand...
  • In any event, the lighting could be better. On the Reverse, the "E" and "F", both at the same angle, appear to have weak or no left sides. That's gotta be lighting, no? Could be much better in hand. Toning is neutral/negative to me.

In the details department, I would expect more in a 68 grade. Is this really a collector's coin especially for a 68 holder? I don't know the Mercury dime series so I must assume the master hubs are in their 21st year of use. But since there are Full bands for this year, there is room for a better struck example. But not every collector thinks it's important to have fully struck coins for their collections. I don't know why but that's the way it is.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Looking at the reverse I do not see this coin as anywhere close to a 68, can someone/anyone please explain?
  • I dunno, I was wondering about the strike as well its neutral appearance. It doesn't "say" 68 to me, even technically.

It is very hard to grade from images especially when they are soft.
