1950-present proof type set

I updated my type set to include the 1997 silver PR70DCAM I just received (thanks, Mitch, for another nice coin!). It was painful, however, to see it replace my 1964 in 69DCAM---how can PCGS consider these two coins comparable, such that they occupy the same slot in the type set? The silver proof set run (which is a totally different concept than the 1964 idea of silver coins, in general) didn't even start until 28 years after the 60's silver coins had ceased to be produced. Oh well, at least I can see them both in the JFK proof set.

  • Pete,

Same silver composition at 90% is the logic. That and I think that it is a partial cave-in to those who didn't want to have to purchase the 64 Kennedy in CAM or DCAM. The difference in price between a 1992 69DC and a 1964 69DC is astrnomical.

    Pete:

Why not be a real man about this and keep the 64 in 69DCAM in. OK, you get one less point, but who cares. A real proof guy will think a lot more of your set with the 64 than with a 97 even in 70DC.

YEAH PETE. WHY DON'T YOU ACT LIKE A "MAN" LIKE GREG SAYS. THIS WAY YOU CAN RETURN THAT 97 SILVER KENNEDY TO ME IMMEDIATELY FOR A FULL REFUND (PLEASE, PLEASE) SO I CAN SELL IT FOR $200-$250 MORE THIS WEEK!! imageimage WONDERCOIN.

Greg: If you can keep it up on Pete's "manhood" and he caves and returns the coin to me for his full refund, we're partners on the upside from there! image Wondercoin.

  • Thanks for all your kind(!?!) thoughts!!! After careful consideration (well, maybe it wasn't so careful!), I have made the following decisions:

Greg: I guess you're right: if I were to act like a real man, I'd leave the 64 in the set. But being the registry point-sensitive jerk that I am, you'll just have to go the JFK registry set to se the 64 in 69DCAM.

Mitch: As always, a kind offer to take the coin back---BUT, see answer to greg, above.

Keith: Yeah, I guess I understand their "logic", but 28 years did go by. i didn't think that the point of the registry sets was to omit the difficult coins. But, obviously, with a beautiful high grade 1964 JFK, one could (probably quite correctly) view me as somewhat biased in this observation.

    Cheers,

I only had a 68CAM in that slot. I was still sad to replace it with the essentially mandatory 69DCAM, but point is points!! I will be hanging onto my 64 Kennedy though. Maybe I'll put it into the mixed PR/CS set, where I'm not competing. Not that I'm truly competitive in the all PR set either.

If you want to sell the 64 in 69DCAM for what you paid for the 97 in 70DCAM please let me know.image

  • Greg;
Rest assured that if I want to sell the 64 69DCAM for what I paid for the silver 70DCAM, you'll be the first to know. (But I wouldn't hold your breath on this one, however!!).

  • Nice pickup on the pf70,but if the points were the same I would have liked to see you keep it in..
I replaced my 69cam with a $20 69DC coin witch does not seem right.....OH Well, so I sell the 1964 and pocket the money...........Gary

  • I was about to suggest using those '64s in the 20'th set, then I realized I was in the same boat.

So I tried replacing my '64 in 68 DCAM with a '98 I have in 69 DCAM. It didn't change my total points!?! I tried deleting, then adding one or the other and the result was the same. Now that seems weird! Perhaps I'm right at some round off point or something?

Anyway I looked at the weights and there are no DCAM bonuses so a '64 in 69 would be the same as a '98 in 69 DCAM. The weight is only 1 so I guess these just don't matter much. Now if you ask me a '64 in 69 DCAM is a coin that matters. I guess that is the way it will be unless they start weighing dates within a type.

A long time ago I argued that was too complicated, but the '64 design does seem different from the '98, and I'm not just talking about how my '64 has better cameo contrast then my '98 image I don't think I will start asking for more varieties or else I might get my wish and then who know what other varities will be needed? For sure we need 3 SBAs, right Super? image

In type sets, collectors usually go for the highest grade even if a common date. That's what the weightings reflect. I think that's what we asked for. Same for all series. A 34D Washington in MS66 is much more valuable than a 58 Washington in MS67. Yet the 58 is worth more points. If you want your 34D rewarded do a Washington set not a type set.
