For you 80s kids....2002 Donruss What If PSA SCANS

Found out about this set a year ago and fell in love with it. This was my era for childhood collecting and I've always liked the "What If" concept. Tractor beam, sucked me right in image

These aren't super rare (inserted at 1:12 (Hobby) and 1:24 (Retail) and not terribly "valuable" either. I think Donruss had the best card designs of the 80s and that made the set more appealing to me. Wish they would have used the 1985 and 1987 designs a little bit (I love black borders), but...............oh well.

I found these cards sold as a set on eBay some time ago and jumped at it. Price was great and when I got them, most looked really solid so I decided to send them off on a CC Special. Thought they would look good in PSA holders.

84 Donruss Puckett and 86 Fleer Clark would really have been awesome. Especially 84 D Puckett.

I've always wondered what a 1982 Donruss Cal Ripken would look like. image

I've never seen those but they're awesome. There's a similar subset for the hockey guys... 2002 Topps Lost Rookies. (There are a few more from this set including Lemieux, Roy and Yzerman.)

i love cards like this. if they really did make 84 Donruss cards of Clemens, Puckett, and Gooden, think they'd be worth more than the 84 Fleer Update versions?

I don't think so just because there was much less '84 Fleer Update.

(I find it funny, though, that even nearly 20 years after its original release Donruss STILL couldn't make well centered "84" Donruss cards. The card of Eric Davis with Rose in the background would have been cool to own in the day had it actually existed.)
  • Actually, I think the Fleer Update would be worth less than they are now if the 84 Donruss Puckett, Clemens and Gooden existed. It wouldn't have had the demand when initially released. Lastly, we'd be breaking 1984 Donruss boxes all day long at $15 plus each in the group rips. image

  • I've never seen those - very cool cards. That 86 Donruss Will Clark base card would have given Canseco's cards a run for their money back in 89-90.

Ive always loved the 1984 Donruss Rated Rookie cards as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys, glad you like 'em.

I would have to agree that 84 Donruss versions of "The Big Three" would put a little dent in the Fleer Update set. But, as Redheart said, the low production still keeps the price up.

I don't collect Hockey, but it's cool to see that Topps did a similiar theme set. Topps also made baseball "Cards that Never Were" in 2007. I had that set, but sold it off.

I really like the Mattingly & Goodens. I will have to get a couple of those.
  • The thing I hate about this board is that I open a thread, see something like this, and think "Oh, I've gotta have that."

If you mean "factory sets", I don't believe so. About he only way I've seen to get them and built a complete set is hand collated one-by-one. I've only seen this complete "What If" set come up once in about 2 years, so I got lucky to find that auction. Sportlots and CheckOutMyCards have a decent stock of most cards in the set.

As for PSA graded examples, mine are about the only ones. Some of the Clemens, Boggs and Bonds have a few graded examples floating around.

@Big80s, I agree....the Puckett cards are really nice and the colors really stick out at ya.

No Griffey? Are these a subset from the 'originals' series boxes?

    Thanks,

No Griffey unfortunately. But, I believe the point was to give "Rated Rookies" or "The Rookies" cards to players who did not have them originally. I would have loved to see Bo Jackson, Griffey, McGwire and others in this set, but they already had either Rated Rookies or The Rookies cards back in the day.

These were an insert into the Base Set packs from 2002 Originals. There are actually 3 total "What If" subsets. Donruss also made a 1978 and 1980 "What If" subset. So, there are actually 75 "What If" cards that could be pulled from packs of 2002 Originals. I'm not a big fan of the '78 and '80 versions. They certainly cut down the chances of pulling one of the Rookies cards.
