Does anyone else here collect date sets?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have complete sets of 1818 and 1861, the latter without gold. I am working on the 1849 set (with gold).

How about you?

I never did, but wouldn't mind trying a 1921 set...

or maybe my birth year minus 100, 1871.

About 20 years ago, I started on a proof set of all denominations from the Civil war year of 1864.
Last year, I completed the gold, with the purchase of the gold dollar in Pr 66.

Then, I found the half and dollar in Pr 65. Don't know if I will complete the remaining.

I have built many date sets for collectors who want to put away coins from their birth year or even the birth year of their kids. Some great coins have been taken off the market for years, if not decades, in connection with these sets.

I put together a 1909 set. I liked the designs that year, all the key dates and the different copper types. Link to the set is in my signature line.

A current year (2012) set would require deep pockets - 89 coins by my count, and a price tag approaching $20k.

My Adolph A. Weinman signature :)

That's one nice thing about the 1861 (non-gold) set...fewer coins (11) and can be completed in reasonable fashion for well under $20k. image

Anyone have any other ideas for 19th century date sets that are completable? I dabbled in 1880 and decided that there was no way that I was going to pay what was required to get a business strike 1880 nickel.

Had the 1853 working for a year or two but finally moved on.
Do have my birth year and had the kids at one time but neither of them care about coins so broke those up too.

Kind of like a date set but by Denomination is my circulation date set of Halves. Halves

I collect my birth year, 1962. I haven't done much with proofs yet.

You can see my 1962 mint set in the registry, #1 for 2012, wasn't easy, at least for me anyway.
I also have a showcase with all my PCGS 1962 coins. Collectors Showcase - Themed Coins - The Year 1962
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

1899 with Gold and without. Not a bad year as far as coins go. Some very easy coins, with a few that are harder to find, than I thought.

    With gold.
  • Several years ago, I began completing birth year mint sets for myself and my wife (1964 and 1969, respectively). Over a number of years, I have built these into the #1 ranked registry sets for both. Now on a new quest, I am combining my interests in both numismatics and genealogy and am starting work on mint sets for my father (1937), grandfather (1911, great-grandfather (1852) and my 2nd great-grandfather (1808). Based upon conditon, the older sets are not likely to be competitive in terms of registry ranking, but will certainly make for a nice showcase and, when combined, the included coins would be a significant representation of type from both the 19th and 20th centuries.

Am presently working on the following sets:

    1847 & 1861 in AU/MS -circulation issues.
.......... Have made a good dent in both sets .

Have put these sets together but am missing
a coin here and there :

1889 - MS & PR - both complete - now adding die varieties.
..........Set includes O/C, and Dbl Strikes, Broadstrikes.

    1891 - MS & PR - MS Complete - now adding die varieties, &
...........The PR set is missing the Morgan.

    1917 - MS set - complete - missing 1917 DDO Cent - mostly
...........Mint State coins, the MM Halves are all AU. I also have
...........the 1917 McKinley Gold Dollar... As well as US Notes.
...........Adding errors to the set as well. O/C's, Dbl Strikes.

    1921 - MS set - virtually complete - sold my AU 55 - 1921-S Half
........... Now looking for one to blend in better with the MS Halves.
........... Also adding error coins and other interesting varieties of 1921.

    1947 - MS Set. Complete - have upgraded most coins over the years;
.......... It's a very presentable set of my birth year coins. Far from a #1 set.

Other dates in Proof: 1956, 1957, 1993 and 1998 . All Birthyear sets for cousins.
