October Pickup: '52 George Crowe High Number

I'm really, really proud of this one, for my '52 set. Paid a fair bit over SMR for it, but totally worth it. I don't know WHAT PSA was thinking...perfect, original colors, sharp corners, dead centered, no gum stains, and not a hint of creasing. The picture doesn't show it, but the gloss is outstanding. It utterly mystifies me they graded it a 6...I've got 7.5s that aren't this good. I'll probably crack and resubmit, once I have a few more worth sending in. I think it'll get at least a 7. Just goes to show, buy the card, not the plastic!

That looks more like a 7 than a 6 to me. Very nice card.

AWESOME looking card. Love the centering on that HI #. Based on the scan, looks like the two right corners may have kept it out of a "7" slab. Could just be the scan though. CONGRATS!

Nice card, but it reminds me of this. link
  • Looks like a bump on the left border, not sure how that would effect the grade.

  • The initial scans really don't give the best sense of the corners. Hopefully these will be more informative. I'd love your opinions:

Brian ... thanks for the larger photos. Now I definitely say that it would be real hard to get that card in a "7" holder with those corners. HOWEVER, it presents real well. Congrats again.

Definitely worth a shot at a 7. 6.5 at the very least.

Maybe its just the scan but doesnt it look like the PSA logo is digging into the card on the bottom right?

Ha! I noticed that too. Just an optical illusion, since the logo is on the outside of the case.

A centered high number '52 is a great thing. Nice card and congrats.

You know? I'll take a centered PSA 5 or 6 over an off center 7 or 8 ANY DAY. They're the most important part of a card, and honestly, I wish the graders would bother to designate as such. There really needs to be some kind of the assessment of the population of centered cards, to better judged valuation. I mean, I literally have yet to see a centered '52 Topps Berra come up on ebay, and I'd be fascinated to know what the population would be.

Collectors of the '52 set know which cards are hard to find centered, and when one of those comes up at auction that is centered the price spikes for sure. My Berra isn't centered either by the way. image

Folks..............those scans of the corners are quite magnified. That's a 7 all day long. Great eye appeal. Take another good look at it and crack it out.
