Friday Nights Card Show - TONS of pictures for you to enjoy

Just came back from the monthly card show about 2 hours ago. Was pretty solid as far as cards go. Was a lot of people there BUT ...not as much as I expected - healthy overall. Beckett and JSA were also in the house. I decided to bring my camera because when Ive posted these type of threads, people usually enjoy seeing whats out there so I tried to take enough shots so you get a feel what these shows are like. Everytime someone usually asks me so Ill just say it now. This was in Dania which is located just N. of Miami (about 35 min North)

I did pick up 2 cards that I REALLY have wanted for some time now. One is a monster card for me and its so good that Im not going to share it just yet because it deserves its own thread imo.

Anywho - enough blabbing and let the show begin...

thanks for the pics and update! Haven't been to a show in 15 years. Nice to see that some things are still exactly the same, hehe. now let's see that monster!

and +1 on $5 pro-set boxes. always a fun rip.
  • nice pics FOO nice to see some nice weekly card shows still exsist.
  • It's good to see a monthly show with some great stuff available. My only complaint - I hate when people put stickers on slabs.

Im sitting home debating going today. Are you going back?
  • Not yet RookieWax - I’m expecting it by Tuesday the latest. Rick already let me know he sent it out Wednesday. I read online that someone said they bought 2 cases and spent all night ripping open BOTH cases and didn’t pull out a single one. Od
ds arent good. Let us know and make a thread or if I get mine 1st, I’ll make it and we’ll post updated on the same one. So basically there will be 2 1990 Topps cases being ripped in search of a Frank Thomas NNOF. Should be interesting.

Mark - I'm at work right now and stuck here till 3pm so no, I would be making it out today - but go regardless. You’ll have a great time. There’s some quality stuff out there and lots of new dealers. Let me know what you find. I'll be posting me 2 pickups later tonight.

  • Always great seeing card show photos. Thanks for sharing image

I'd love to see a show like this around the Nashville, TN area. image

This brings back memories of 'pre-internet/ebay'.

    Thanks,

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a decent size show ... reminds me of the ones I went to EVERY weekend here on Long Island in the mid to late 80's.

How negotiable are most of the dealers? I looked at some of the prices and it seems to me that they are about 20% or so over VCP.

Is that show at the Fronton?

  • Good Morning Doug,

This show is located in South Florida. It’s called Dania's Card Show. It was started about 4 years ago. It has its good months and its bad months but overall I enjoy it. Its 1 weekend a month. Friday evenings/nights and Saturday morning/afternoon.

Yes, there are some dealers who want and expect to get prices over SMR and VCP and I guess they can depending on the card. Again, whatever your willing to pay however most are negotiable and want to move product so they will come down. For example - there’s a Roger Clemens 84 Fleer and an 84 Donruss Mattingly both PSA 10's. I know that dealer well enough to know that he’s not really looking to drop those prices. Maybe... and I mean MAYBE he might sell it for $20 less but they are really high quality cards. Actually all his cards are. He recently had a 61 Mantle PSA 9 that he actually sold on eBay for $3000! That was his initial asking price and started the auction there and he got 1 bite and it sold. Again, all depends on how bad someone wants the card but he doesn’t seem to have any problems holding onto it if it doesn’t sell for his price it seems from what I can tell.

Btw - the last 2 Mattingly’s on eBay sold for $430 and $565 so his asking price of $500 seems pretty accurate.

Foo ... I just asked if it was held at the Fronton because I saw the Dania Jai Alai sign in one of your pictures.

Marc - Funny seeing how cheap those '80's boxes are. I for one liked the Topps Big baseball cards back in the day. The late '50's case (mostly '57's) is nice! BTW, I always thought you lived in California with the whole Canseco thing until I saw the Jai Alai banner in one of the photos.

I'm surprised to see that there are shows like that still around.

Out of curiosity, was there an admission fee?
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001

Foo... my 1990 Topps case arrived this past Thursday. I am to the point where I randomly pick a box from the middle of the case to open. If I do not notice any unusual printing errors I tend to stop my ripping there for a while. Remember, there are 12 other cards near the Thomas card on the orange bordered sheets that would also be without portions of black ink. I pulled several of those cards (but no Thomas) and none of them had any printing issues.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing, I am in Southern Cal and you would think we would be able to get some shows like that. I liked how a number of the dealers actually had prices on their stuff.

Marc - Great pics and thanks for sharing. I've actually been to that Dania Jai-Alai -- many, many years ago -- pretty cool memory for me.

Jeff - maybe SoCal needs are card show promoter image

I'm actually in two of these pics. I'm pretty sure I know which card you picked up. I think I spoke with you about it. I also picked up two nice cards which I'll try to post in the next day or so. Pretty good show IMO.

  • Scott, that's kinda funny that you mentioned that to Jeff about being a promoter. I thought the same exact thing. I think he should gather some dealers from shops and even craigslist for people who want to sell there stuff and make something happen. I think it would be a very cool thing to start. Bring back the hobby in your town. Ebays fun and stuff but interacting with other card collectors is also part of the fun and experience in the hobby.

Leadoff - I remember that conversation. I cant believe that was you. What a small world. Yeah, you know which card it is. lol Thanks for not spoiling it for me. Ill post it up in a bit. I'm really excited to show it. BTW - Did you pick up anything.

  • Guess you didn't hear J.R. but Lou got married a few months back. His wife lives in Arizona and so he moved. Last time he was down here was 2 shows (months) ago. He was leaving to Arizona just a few days after that show. Although he still sends out the monthly email, he ended up passing the show over to Adam.

I picked up a '66 Mantle PSA 8(before 1/2 grades) and a '59 Aaron PSA 8. Both are very nice for the grade. I got them from the dealer just beside of the dealer you got your Maris from...the guy on the corner. Nice older gentleman...both of them. Mine was a trade+cash transaction.
  • Thank you for sharing. Good stuff!!!

Me and a buddy set up a couple of tables at the show yesterday. I didn't have time to go through my stuff until Friday night so I wasn't very organized. This was the first time that I was on the other side of the table. I may do more in the future now that I learned a thing or two.

  • Great pics. Brings back a lot of memories for someone who doesn't get to shows much.
  • What happened to the hollywood park card show in LA? I can remember going as recently as 2003 or 04, I think.

-I remember the shows I use to go to in the 90's....pomona, long beach (coin and card show), LA convention center, anaheim sometimes.

You wonder what's going to happen in another 5-10 years. Someone needs to save card show photos for posterity. You'll show them to your grandkids or relatives like it's an antique phone.
