Comparison of two 1811/09 Bust dimes:

I wanted to share these 2 bust dimes and ask your opinions of their grades. One obverse is an earlier die state, while the other is a VLDS. So how do you think PCGS graded them? Comments and opinions welcome, thanks for looking!

Stealer, while complete rims aren't a must on some issues you normaly want to see a full bust and date for the good grade. Seeing the head partialy worn away with a weak date it sort of precludes a full good grade

Crypto (and others) who guessed Ag3 and Vg8 are correct. When I submitted the late die state coin, I was expecting a G4 or G6 for a grade. While I tend to agree with wanting to see a full date/bust for a good, the reason for the weakness on this coin are die defects. If you compare the central details of both coins they are quite similar, possibly stronger on the obverse ag3. IMO, had the AG3 been an early die state, the coin would have been a VG08/10...of course this is just my speculation image

detail and luster when it comes to grades almost doesn't matter at a certain point, they are either there or they aren't and the reason for them being missing doesn't matter.

While a coin can be UNC with a weak once it wears down the line between weak strike and excessive wear becomes a moot point.
