since we're remembering the past...(MPL posse)

Let's fire up the posse. Just noticed prices taking a whack. Did I miss a big MPL auction lately where prices were soft? Why did the VDB get weaker; did one trade hands? What say you!

Lots of Ebay listings (look under proof, matte, etc.) lots of Heritage listings. seems some in many dealers inventories as well. Many more in NON PCGS holders with low PR 62/63 grades that a lot of people would have loved to have gotten their hands on for affordability. I think either these were sleeping out the frenzy and are just now coming to market or were being hoarded in the hopes of them going way up in price. Who knows, but a couple of them I would sure like to crack out and give a acetone bath and see it I could get a better grade.

Again, just my opinion, but you MUST separate discussion of MPL's between the VDB and the other 8 dates as regards price and availability. The other 8 MPL's may be "soft" in price now. These coins ARE available thru specialty dealers in various grades. If you know where to look you can acquire one. There are not a lot of them out there but there are enough to satisfy the demand.

Acquiring a 1909VDB MPL is a completely different story. I believe that almost all of the legitimate examples are currently accounted for in existing collections. Specialty dealers KNOW where most of these coins are held. They are NOT available for sale thru any advertisements. The few that are available come via major auctions which are publicised or in some cases by private treaty between owners or with assistence from a specialty dealer. All these coins MUST be in major third party holders. The value of these coins in individual grades and color combinations is what a potential buyer and potential seller agree upon. I believe there are less than 150 out there and probably less than 25 that "might" be sold in the next few years. All MY opinion.

I hear there's a Vegas area collector with 49 proof VDBs. Zoiks!

WOW! Hope they all get sold at once someday... then maybe I can get one at a reasonable price image

In any event, it would be cool just to see an entire roll of them in one place at one time. WOW! Hope they get shown off someday when the alleged collector is done hoarding.

    Renomedphys,
Where did you hear this story? Sounds kind of hard to believe unless you can provide a reliable source. If you want to PM me, I'd be interested to know. Thanks,

I have been in contact with Andy Skrabalak regarding this thread and he has authorized me to state the following:

Andy says "there is a customer of Angel Dee's that Andy has been purchasing VDB Proofs for and that he does have 49 of them. He does not live in Las Vegas. Anyone with questions can feel free to contact Andy."

I've heard the same story from a couple different people.

Hmmm, I do think that I heard he was from Vegas. It was not from Andy, but rather from a member here that hardly posts anymore. The 49 figure is from Andy. Still a WOW!

Any individual with 49 examples of a single Proof issue tells me that the issue is NOT rare. Maybe the 1909 V.D.B. still qualifies as "scarce".

No one used the word rare. It's relative. Given the popularity of the Lincoln series, there are way too few of these to satisfy demand-hence the prices and the market rarity.

I'd be curious to see the $1+million collection of proof VDBs....

Knowing Andy, I am sure he has confirmed that his customer does indeed own these VDB MPL's and that they are genuine. (ie) In major third party holders. If they were RAW I don't believe Andy would have made such a statement publically. If that is the case, then the only thing that has changed is that we now know that of the 200 VDB MPL's that have been holdered by PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG since 1986, one of Andy's customers has approximately 25% of them. (Probably well over 30% since we all know some of the total have been cracked out and reholdered). THE TOTAL NUMBER OF GENUINE (HOLDERED) VDB MPL's HAS NOT CHANGED. Therefore the availability of these coins to fill the needs of collectors is dependent upon Andy's customer and his willingness and timing to dispurse his hoard. It still amazes me that any one person could accumulate this many of these coins, presumably in recent auctions and by private treaty. It will be interesting to see what happens in the market now. JMHO. Steveimage

YES! It would. Regardless, to me, a roll just isn't a roll unless it's in, you know, a ROLL.

This is pretty amazing given the following information on PCGS Slabbed 1909 vdb MPL's. Only 118 PCGS slabbed examples! (And this might have some double counts from resubmissions?)
